Gender: Posts: 8,655 Thanks: 108 Thanked 85 Times in 56 Posts | Double Fine's Kickstarter Project earns $1 million in a day Tim Schafer (that lovely man who worked on Monkey Island games, Psychonauts, etc) started a Kickstarter project for a new adventure game with his company, Double Fine. It went live earlier today and not only did it exceed its $400,000 goal in just eight hours, it's received over $1 million in funding. By the time the 30-day window has passed, it's expected to have raised between $3-5 million. This is insane. If they make many millions of $ on this, I hope they use some of that to set about the process of making a Grim Fandango HD remake (which may include having to buy the rights or some such) or a new Monkey Island game. I can dream, can't I? Double Fine Adventure by Double Fine and 2 Player Productions — Kickstarter |

But, the "donators" do get something out of it; they get the game when if/when it's done. On the whole, their donation makes it more likely that there is another Tim Schafer game rather than no Tim Schafer game. I think it's called a donation for legal reasons; you don't really have a guarantee that something will fall out of it. It's like the old-timey patronage model for the arts except the Consumer is King. Irregardless, I think this is the best way to get around the big publisher business model we have. Arguably, this only works with already-established names though (I doubt $1mm could be raised by a Tim Horton). It's nice that there are places where some indie game devs could pitch their design doc for a game, get backers from the general gaming public, then use that funding to actually develop the game. |

Personally, I think it's awesome that he's not only doing this, but roped Gilbert into it! |
