I applaud them for the move...at least someone still has the guts to stand for what they believe these days.

The December report complained that some in the alliance had questioned "the truthfulness of Holy Scripture," refused to affirm the necessity of conscious faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, promoted women preachers, criticized the SBC and its foreign mission board and adopted an "anti-American" tone.

yes, heaven forbid that women should be allowed to preach.

He also complained that the American Baptist Churches, a U.S. denomination, includes "gay-friendly congregations," and that other members of the world alliance call the inerrancy of Scripture into question.

B FRENDLY TO GAY PEEPL??????/ NO SENS AT ALL!11

I congratulate them as well. Having free thought and being open to other people is a terrible thing. Now they have more time to lock themselves in their shacks and have sex with their cousins.

Even if what they stand for is rather silly.

You blast them for their beliefs and accuse them of close-mindedness, and yet you display that same trait with a side of prejudice. Just a bit hypocritical there Cap'n.

The fact remains that the Bible teaches against both women preachers and homosexuality, no matter what modern society may say about it. I think it's great that they're standing for what they believe in despite that.

For the record, I am both Southern and Baptist. Not Southern Baptist though...some of their doctrine I don't agree with.

Come on, Tri. Some people just need to open their eyes a little bit and be a little less silly. It's not good to take what the Bible says 100% and nothing else. Sometimes you have to change.-jay

I've had my eyes open for a long time, and I've yet to find something in the Bible I shouldn't live by. I didn't grow up in church; far from it in fact. So it's not like I was indoctrinated from birth or anything.

Is it really silly to think homosexuality, or even women preachers (men are the head while women are the heart), is wrong? I don't think so, and not just because the Bible says it.

Just because other members have started shunning the beliefs they've upheld for thousands of years doesn't mean you have to blindly follow them just for the sake of change or "fitting in".

I agree with 'Toch. What's popular isn't always right, and what's right isn't always popular. Kudos to the Southern Baptists. (Now they just have to stop constantly asking for money.)

Sometimes you have to change, but sometimes you need to be consistent.

I have no problem with people believing things, but come on, even I can see that sometimes people who are ultra-religious get a little crazy, just like anyone.

And personally, I find it more scary when people blindly follow a religion, which is something that many people too.

Too much of anything isn't a good thing.

As you know, I am a practicing Catholic, but I feel that it is most healthy when you combine religion with other forms of education and science.

Like the people who follow creationism and completely refuse to believe any part of evolution. Is it really healthy to live this way? Sure, people can believe whatever they want, but it's sometimes a problem when these people are so adament on pushing their beliefs on others, or refusing to think that there is another alternative.

I'm not trying to go off on all Southern Baptists here. I'm just making a little rant about the few religious extremists out there who follow their religions blindly, don't look at other facts, and constantly try to push their beliefs on other. Religion is a good thing. It is very helpful for maintaining a healthy life.

I'm just setting my position straight now, to ward off future arguements. I have no problem with people being conservative with a religion. I have no problem if these Southern Baptists want to get together and believe whatever they want to believe. I have no problem if they want to continue to go on being against woman preachers and homosexuality. That's their right as human beings. I agree with that.

But personally, though, I think it's a little unhealthy to live your life that way. I'm not saying for them to blindly change to follow society. But being open is a good thing.-jay

I vote we stone Jay and Carter to death for promoting kindness to and acceptance of our fellow humans and giving us the evil open mindedness. Also charges of one person that Jay is a witch. After that we can turn the country into a theocracy and persecute anyone who disagrees with the church leaders and label things and places outside church control as Satanic.

But Carter's not...that was the point of my second post. He's showing that same close-mindness.

I don't see how Jay thinks Southern Baptists are extremists, considering there are millions of them and not one believes we should be stoning gays, burning down abortion clinics, etc. There's a big difference between conservative and extreme.

I don't think all Southern Baptists are extremists. I'm sure very few of them are.

But extremists are still out there.-jay

Harharhar.

Well, I was honestly joking about them locking themselves in a shack and having inbred sex with each other. That was something I felt like syaing to stir stuff up.

As for how I feel about southern baptists... I could waste my time and go out and try to explain how I feel toward them, but Jay pretty much did that.

Yeah, he did turn SL into a newt, after all.

And I agree with you on the extremists issue, Jay. I am not an extremist, but I'm not going to change my views just because a bunch of people say I should because it's "fairer". Of course, that doesn't mean I'm going to go out of my way to give others a hard time about their beliefs.

And I am open to SOME changes in my views, but only if they makes sense to me. For example, if I go around saying 1 + 1 = 3, and then someone give me believable evidence saying that what I'm saying is wrong, I'll change what I'm saying.

Well, she could understand "wa-wa".

Let me ask ya something, Tri: Let's go out on a limb here and give that blanket "men are the head, women are the heart" thing some credit. Don't we need some preaching from the heart sometimes?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

CHF, we aren't saying women and their counsel aren't important, but they should not be at the head of a church.

I'm not surprised. This is an excellent blow struck for those against religious control, however. Any break in unity out of differences is an excellent strike for 'the enemy'.
