Quick info:

The Liberals are the centre of Canadian politics, which is the left fringes of the Democrats. Conservatives are usually considered to be around Kerry Democrats, and are considered to be pretty far right up here. The NDP is FAR left of the Democrats, and is a socialist party. The Bloc Quebecois is a Quebec-separtist party, and they tied for their best outing ever.

The one independant is a Conservative that lost his nomination, and wanted to run anyway. It is suspected he will either join the Conservatives, or vote with them on almost everything.

Should the Liberals lose a major vote, they will be forced to call another election.

From what I've read, its mostly from the strong showing of the Bloc Quebecois, as the separatist movement is gaining more ground in Quebec.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Around here, they just call for recounts.

Yes, without the Bloc showing the Liberals would have won a majority, or very close to it. However, not all people who vote Bloc are separtists. Both the Conservatives and NDP have virtually no base in Quebec. Quebecers are generally pissed because of the sponsership scandal, which centered around a program that was meant to portray a pro-federalist message in Quebec. They seemed to have felt a personal attack on themseleves, regardless of what their stance is. The provincial Liberal government has also been low in popularity, and many people are just pissed at the Liberals. Since there is no other alternative, they voted Bloc.

America is, as a rule, one of the most conservative countries in all of "Western" civilization. Part of this might be the Cold War. Because of our strict contrast with the Soviet Union, we were less willing to implement Welfare State-type programs, because the government helping the people was clearly Commie propaganda.

Dana Carvey, Jim Carrie, John Candy, Eugene Levy, and I've heard Robin Williams, but I'm not too sure about that one.

More to the point, though, I'm pretty pleased. I don't like the 'new' Conservatives at all- much of their proposals are pretty unconstitutional- and while I think the Liberals have been in power too long, I hope that their current precarious situation in government might jolt them out of complacency.

An important note about the minority government is that the NDP won enough seats to form a coalition majority with the Liberal party. Actually, they're one shy of half the seats of parliament, but they can appoint one of the conservatives as speaker of the house and thus he cannot vote, creating a virtual majority.
