I'll find the article later, but on the news, they had a report about a kid who died after a fight at school.

ER... I'm sketchy on details
but what do you think?

Sad ain't it

Article Here
Quote:
Memphis, TN - Memphis City School Superintendent Carol Johnson was shaken up. Visibly shaken up. Schools are supposed to be places of learning. They're not supposed to be places where 14 year olds get beaten up and die. "It's very tragic," Dr. Johnson said. "And it should never have happened. No child should ever go to school and not be safe."

If there is one place in the world that is supposed to be a safe haven for the young, it's school. A place where they are taught about the power of knowledge. A place where, for a few hours, they're able to stay away from the streets of this city. Streets where some are more impressed with the power of violence than the power of knowledge. "Our prayers and our hearts go out to the family," Dr. Carol Johnson said. "Nothing could be more tragic. Nothing could be more sad. It's a very sad day."

She wouldn't say any more. What more is there to say? Dr. Carol Johnson is a superintendent of schools, not a miracle worker. She and all the school board members, mayors, councilmen and governors in the world can't guarantee a child's protection. All they can do is try. "We're going to have to go into the community," school board member Wanda Halbert said. "We're going to need to talk to the students and let them see that fighting is just not something we are in school to do. We're there to learn."

There is only so much that can be done. And that's what makes what happened at Westside that much more tragic. "We can't stop what happened at Westside," board member Deni Hirsch said. "We just can't. We can hope the children learn a lesson from this tragedy."

And while she talked, and while she thought about what happened at Westside, Deni Hirsch did what a lot of people in this city did, when hearing about a 14 year old boy being beaten and killed at school. She started to cry. "All I can think of is, I want to hug my children," she said. "I want to keep them safe. That's what every Mom would think."

^Agreed. And why is the school focussed so much on the violence itself and not on what might have caused it? Something must be seriously wrong with those kids.
