Maybe I'm just stupid, but in the way they talked, I could not find a very clear difference in some of the things they were saying.

I dont care what polls say, Cheney crushed him. As Chris Mathews put it, Edwards was like a squirt gun and Cheney was a howitzer.

Wow, you're almost exactly like every other republican in that you automatically say that the Republican candidate crushed the Democratic one.

I can't say I felt either of them really outperformed the other - Cheney had some cute one-timers, e.g., the one about not having met Edwards until the night of the debate. But really they both had their moments.

Best moment of the debate - at the end, Edwards said "I'd like to thank our moderator, my opponent, and the people of blah blah" or something to that extent, and then Cheney said the exact same thing, conspicuously excepting the nod to his opponent. That had me laughing my proverbial ass off.

Chaney came off as out of touch and in denial about several things concerning the Iraq policy that were proven false months ago.

He's publically met Edwards at least twice (once addressing him by name).

Image is 95% of politics. Bush can get away with looking like a bumbling idiot because people see him as "like them." Chaney is like a pissed off old man that takes footballs from little kids just to pop them and screams "GET OFF MY LAWN." Chaney comes off like a Howitser because he's a mean-hearted bastard. Sadly, mean-hearted bastards rarely do well at the polls.
