Here's the topic to discuss the election night. During the night I will be updating the header with my own electoral map as I hear who has won what state. I will also be keeping a running total of electoral votes.

Anyone interested in making early predictions should check out the election map at the LA Times page.

Anyone want to bet on which state marrs up the election process in the worst possible way to take "Dumbest state in the union" title from Florida? While Florida is showing itself as a champion that could repeat, I think Ohio might make a decent run at it.

For whatever reason, I don't feel like making a topic of my own, so...

My take on this whole presidential battle. I made it around two weeks ago.

It would be so awesome if that map stayed exactly like it is now.

Not my fault that your sec. of state is being accused of massive misconduct BEFORE the election.

Cool map, L47. What do the numbers in each state mean?

For you Europeans and ignorant americans, let me explain. The numbers in each state are how many electoral votes that state has. Electoral votes are determined by number of senators plus number of represenatives. So Delaware has 2 senators and 1 representative (since representatives are based on population), so we have 3 electoral votes. California, on the other hand, has 2 senators, and 53 representatives, so they have 55 electoral votes. Whichever candidate gets the most votes in a state, wins that state and gets all those electoral votes. First candidate to get 270 wins. If neither candidate gets 270, then the election is thrown into the House of Representatives.

A few side notes to the electoral college. Colorado has an ammendment on the ballot to split electoral votes, which will count for this election if it passes. So Bush could get 5 electoral votes, and Kerry 4 (Colorado has 9 votes). Nebraska and Maine divide their votes by the overal winning candidate gets a couple votes, and then whoever wins each district gets a vote. So far, Nebraska and Maine have yet to split their votes.

Another side note to the electoral college is that it the past, electors could vote for whoever they wanted. Now, there are laws in about 35 states that require electors to vote for the winner of their state. This kind of defeats the safeguard of the electoral college, but that's just my opinion.

^^Yep. In fact, I think Montana & Wyoming are the two least populated states in the country.

That's pretty amazing seeing as how small Rhode Island is. It's even smaller than my country (I think only RI and DC qualify for that).

Yes. Western, land-locked states tend to be VERY sparsely populated. You can literally drive for miles and not see any form of civilization. o_O

Wyoming's so sparsley populated because it's so windy (especially in the centre). One week there in the fall and you will not be complaining about how windy it is where you live unless you see a twister or hurricane closing in on you.

Out of curiosity, what country do you live in Koga?

And Link47, you said that Colorado has 9 electoral votes, but how come your map says it has 8?

Oh rubbish. That map is for 2000. I'll photoshop it for this years numbers later tonight.

And Rhode Island has so many people because it is one of the original colonies, and it's on the coast. Wyoming on the other hand, is all empty farmland, with nothing but cows. There are some roads in Wyoming that are so empty there are no speed limits.
