Not having applied it to low end sets yet is half of my point. It's ridiculous that anyone would expect consumers to just march out and buy new sets or convertors all at once. Affordable sets should have been available years ago.

^ There are probably also places where you can't obtain a signal on your antenna. Pwned.

Except it isn't a problem to the vast majority of the market who subscribe to cable/satalite. 85% of the market subscribes to a provider. People AREN'T going to have to run out and buy anything unless they don't have cable.

oh great, first the government starts with the Fritz chip and that new microsoft OS (project longhorn) and now it's this! why won't the government just stop their illegal actions for once!

BTW, the fritz chip allows the government to remote delete things they might find objectionable (ROMs, downloaded music, etc.) and with Project Longhorn they can track your movements on the net to see what sights you go to and then they might shut that site down if they don't like it. I tell you the Government is getting too much power!

This isn't an illegal action. The government has the right to control the electromagnetic spectrum used for various services. Given that they're wishing to redistrict the EM spectrum of broadcast television to other services (partially in an attempt to boost the economy) as well as increase energy efficiency by not having television manufactures duplicate signals (as well as settle down on a standard, also within their power), this isn't an illegal act on their part.

^ Purposefully so. This topic isn't about those. This topic is about TVs. Go talk about the others somewhere else.

..........

WHY must this be done? I see no point, other than to get satellite providers more money.

^ Actually, digital cable box manufacturers. The cost of digital cable is likely not to go up due to forcing all programming digital since they already provide that.

You know that the price for TVs sets'll skyrocket to the $2000 range once this bill goes through.

Then people will have to go without. TV is not a necessary requirement of life, believe it or not.
And you have a wormdrake up your ass, you vishnu!

We need TVs for kickass entertainment like South Park and Family guy and other sorts of news.

Why the hell would it do that? Many HDTVs cost much more than that, plus any television can still recieve a digital signal. No one here is forcing you to buy LCD/Plasma/DLP sets. You'd probably be pretty retarded dropping money on a Tube right now, but that's not going to change.

^^ The only reason that digital TVs are in the thousands of dollar range at this point is because THOSE are the huge wall TVs. Digital TVs in the 24" and lower range will hardly be that expensive.

A common misconception is that all HD sets are plasma or LCD (ie: flatpanels). They're starting to make more regular HDTV sets in smaller sizes, and if you shop around you can find a 16:9 widescreen set for like 600 or so.
