I doubt there will ever be a compromise that is suitable to both groups. |

So the Christian lobby groups can shut up and go and do something else for a change. Like complaining about late-night operas on the BBC. |

A historical perspective on Christianity with some in-depth Islam studies and all that. And hey, maybe read some essays by some atheist philosophers defending their viewpoint... but then again maybe I just like seeing car fires on CNN. |

Intelligent Design is no more a science than using a pile of bones to tell the future. My personal belief is that if God wanted us to know how He created the universe, He would have told us. The very concept that we think we know how God does and does not work is the very essence of blasphemy. Besides that, how do you think we would handle that knowledge? Let's a take a short trip back in time, shall we? God's talking to Abraham, and then says to him, "By the way, Abraham, did you know there used to be giant animals on this planet, some of which were over 30 feet tall, and could swallow you whole in one bite?" After running home to change his underwear, I'm sure the first thing Abraham would say is "WTF are you talking about, God? Are they still around? Are they going to kill me? Do I have to watch out for them?" The point I'm making is, if you told some guy from 600 B.C. that we fly around in giant vehicles in the sky, and drive other metal vehicles around, anduse everyday appliances such as dish washers, microwaves, TV', PC's, etc. they'd think we were either nuts or possessed. |

I go to school in an extremely conservative community (average income $200,000+; largest churches are Catholic and Pentecostal), and our religious studies course balances each faith equally. Our philosophy course doesn't even talk about religion, except in the case of philosophers like Kierkegaard. I personally am an atheist, so I consider myself... if not unbiased, then equally biased against all religions. ![]() |

You're making a minute distinction. And why would I make it up? I agree with you more often than not. |

The major problem with religious studies courses won't be seen in all areas, but it will show up significantly across the country. Religious studies is a hard subject to treat with a sense of neutrality, and its even harder to be all inclusive. Going into just the branches of Christianity is a course unto itself. That type of subject is really better left to outside sources, not the public school classroom. This doesn't even get into the human factor of an instructor injecting personal religious feelings in the classroom and teachings. |
