These studies aren't really "obvious", and even if they are obvious, you do need to prove things. Things that we knew as obvious in the past have been overturned by scientific studies like these.

Science advances in two directions: deductive research and inductive research. The science you hear about is inductive: trying to come up with a theory based on some otherwise unexplained events. Deductive science, the grunt work, is the proving of these theories, coming up with experiments which support theories. You have to have both to build a serious knowledge base.
