Pokemon of the Week #59: Ursaring

Ursaring

Type: Normal
Weakness: Fighting
Resistance: Ghost (Immune)
Abilities: Guts, Quick Feet
Best Stat: Attack

Shiny Ursaring looks like this:

ML's Suggested Moveset: Ursaring is one of my favorite Pokemon. Why, you ask?

He's a friggin' bear.

(and Teddiursa is really cute)

Nature: Jolly (+Speed, -Sp. Attack)
Item: Lefties
Ability: Both are great, but I'd go with Quick Feet
EV's: 252 / 252 Speed and Attack
Moves:
Return / Crunch
Aerial Ace
Swords Dance
Stone Edge / Earthquake

Ursaring is fan-tastic. The only problem is its Speed, but that can be boosted fairly high. He has pretty high Defenses, which can compensate for the lack of speed, but the main strat with Ursaring is to get into a slow Wall, or even a slow sweeper, like itself. Hopefully you can get One (just one is enough) swords dance in, but if you can't, that's fine too.

Option moves: I put my choice in the first slot, but highly contemplated the 2nd slot with each. Return gains a lot of STAB and can be potentially lethal against almost anyone. Stone Edge is above EQ because chances are, you already have at least one other Pokemon with EQ on your team. If you don't, go with EQ.

Ursaring is very straightforward. All you need to do is watch its speed very carefully, and make sure you can get that stat as high as possible. Grood luck.

Ursaring is five pounds of awesome in a two pound sack.

Problem with those movesets posted there, though, is that they completely ignore his traits, which can turn him from "UU slow sweeper" into "UU killing machine".

My preferred Ursaring is right here:

Nature: Jolly (+Speed, -Special Attack) or Adamant (+Attack, -Special Attack)
Item: Toxic Orb
Ability: Quick Feet
EVs: Speed and Attack
Moves:
Swords Dance
Facade
Crunch
Earthquake

The idea here is that you send in Ursaring. It takes one turn for Toxic Orb to activate, so you Swords Dance - then take damage form poison, get your speed boost, double the power of Facade to 210 after STAB, and tear everything in front of you to pieces. He's something of a kamikaze attacker by necessity, but if you've taken out the base 110 Speed sweepers on your opponent's team this set will take them to the cleaners for as long as it can hold out.

Facade and Earthquake cover everything in OU except for Skarmory and Bronzong, and both of them are hit harder by Facade than they would be by Stone Edge, and Crunch is on there for any Levitating Ghosts like those pesky Gengars. Of course, Gengar's still usually fast enough to ruin this set, but you get the idea.

Now, if you have a way to pass a speed boost onto Ursaring, switch Quick Feet for Guts and Toxic Orb for Burn Orb - Guts boosts attack, ignoring the burn orb's effects, and he'll live longer with an extra bit of attack to take out those REALLY tough enemies.

The fact that he has to basically kill himself to be really effective means he'll probably never move beyond UU, but I have this set on my main team and he's effective enough to justify having a place.

Bears rule.

If I had an Ursaring, I would totally name it Rachel.

And remember, "I'm-a Charizard, number, well, six."

Woe is me.

I have never gotten to use one of these.

But bears ****ing rule anyways. PLUS it looks cool. AND has a good level-learned move set.

I want one now, but I don't have Emerald, and the GTS would probably ask for a Celebi in exchange for a Teddiursa(SP?).

I have a history with this Pokemon. It was shiny. I fainted it. I didn't know how rare shinies were.

I like it's design and it's potential sounds nice.

..actually, you can't get Ursaring or Teddiursa off R/S/E. It's a G/S/C-only 'mon....

What generation are you stuck on? They're common at the Safari Zone Extention in Emerald, not to mention being plugged into D/P allows for them to be caught near Lake Acuity (Which is where I caught Wy's Teddiursa).

Okay, this topic basically proves that Wyborn's a lot better than me.

(Seriously, that looks pretty deadly. I had completely forgotten about those items that give you status effects.)

Once you completed Emerald. (Not sure if that meant E4 or Hoenn dex), but Elm will give you a national dex. Then a few new places will open up, one of these is a new area in the Safari zone.

The National Dex in Emerald is given once you beat the Elite Four. Better than having to catch all of the Pokemon in the Hoenn Dex, which nets a Johto Starter.

...fraq.

I didn't know a new area would pop up in the Safari Zone.

Hell, I really don't even go there in RSE, 'cause there's no Chansey to get there anymore, and Dratini isn't there either. Without either of those, I really don't have much reason to head into that place. I can't think of anything else Safari-Zone-only that I would want.
