Mushroom Wars

System: Game Cube

Series: Super Mario

Players: 1 in story campaigns, 2 in offline multiplayer, 2-4 in online multi-player mode.

Genre: Real Time strategy

Controls: Basic RTS controls adapted to a GC controller.
A: select unselected unit or building, order selected unit to move or attack.
B: de-select current unit/building.
Control Stick: Move cursor (Hold A while moving to select multiple units).
D-Pad: automatically select pre assigned team (Hold A and press a button on the D-Pad to create said team).
Hold X, Y or Z and press A: memorizes certain areas of the battlefields so you can instantly go there by pressing X, Y or Z.

Accessories: 56K or Broadband adapter. While we’re at it, Mouse & keyboard (Since they’d work better).

Story: For years, the Mushroom Kingdom has dealt with constant attacks by Bowser, the king of the turtles. They have always been saved by the Mario Bros. during such attacks, but there have been talks about creating an army to combat Bowser’s forces. Most disapprove of the idea, believing that they were a peaceful race and it wouldn’t be like them to have an actual military. Finally, a compromise was made, organize the various police forces that most towns had under a central leadership and then spend a considerable of funds on them to make them better prepared for defense in the event the Mario bros. can’t save the day in time.

Bowser, upon hearing the news about the Mushroom Police, decided to gather all of the troops he could get and wipe out the MP before it made his dream of ruling the Mushroom Kingdom impossible. However, Goomba King, Big Bom-Bomb and General Guy protested how the Koopa King had abused the terms of their alliance by barely using any Koopa Troopas or other members of his race in his past plans while many Shy guys, Bom-bombs and Goombas were lost. The trio joined forces with the alien warlord Tatanga and declared war on both the Toads and Koopas.

Now, the age old battle is on the brink of all out war, which side will come out on top? (Corny, I know. But I couldn’t think of anything better to end this part!)

Here’s some RTS terms for those reading this that don’t play RTS games:
Unit-The people & vehicles that populate the game.
Splash damage-an attck that can harm more than 1 unit at a time.
Map: Usually refers to a level played in multiplayer.
Pop Cap: The total number of unit you can have in any mission or map.

Mushroom Police

Overall Pros/Cons:
While not officially an army, the recent increase in funding for training and new weaponry has resulted in the Mushroom Police having the most powerful ground units, which is backed up by the best heroes in the game. On the down side, their small number means they have the lowest Population Cap (75). They’re other big problem is a lack of air power, with no “big” units and the low Pop Cap prevents mass swarming of what they do have. Because most of the battles happen within the boarders of their home, they have the most civilian support. There are perhaps the hardest to use in Multi-player since heroes and civilian support aren’t used in standard matches.

Structures
Head Quarters (Resembles a very large Toad House with a sign on it that reads “HQ”.): Most important building in a base, without it the other ones won’t work. Heroes can be stored in it to protect them from harm. Builders can be trained here.
Training Academy: Basic ground unit producer.
Workshop: Can’t be built until after Training Academy is. Produces large ground units and is needed for Airstrip and Sea Docks to produce larger air and sea units (After it‘s upgraded).
Airstrip: produces air units. Can be built on water after upgrade.
Sea Docks: Produces sea units. Can only be built on shoreline.
Research Center: Can upgrade the various structures and units.
Cannons (the red domed ones from SMS.): Defensive weapon that can target any unit although it’s more effective against the large ones. Can be upgraded to transport small ground units across large distances.
Water Cannons (SM64): Fires water bombs that can damage multiple infantry units.
Fences: Short wooden fences that can slow down an enemy’s invasion of your base. Cheap and quickly built, they can be upgraded into a barb wire version that can hurt units that come in contact with them.

Units
Infantry
Cop: Your basic law enforcer that can shoot fire balls. Upgrades are increased HP and the ability to temporary turn into Metal.
Yoshi Rider: Cop on a yoshi. They attack by slurping an enemy (Turning it into an egg) and throws the egg at another enemy (the Slurped up one isn’t automatically killed, but will be the more heavily damage of the two victims.). Upgrades are increased speed and the ability to sallow foes (which takes several seconds, so it might not be advisable when outnumbered.).
Heavy Arms Cop: carries a pipe containing a Venus Fire Trap for use against stronger ground & air units.
Field Nurse: Heals infantry
Undercover Cop: Skilled at dodging and evading enemy fire. can sneak inside enemy unit-producing buildings and reduce the speed they operate at (By distracting the people in them in case your wondering.).
Vehicles
Artillery Pipe: Large Pipe carried by a team of yoshis. Contains a large VFT with long attack range. Can target anything within range.
Dome Tank: Cannons on treads. Most durable ground unit in the game. Can drop time Bom-bombs after upgrade.
Air
Caped Cop: Basic cop with a yellow cape. Still has HP upgrade, but the metal one has been replaced by a dive bomb upgrade (Splash damage to infantry [including your own], medium damage to armor unit if hit directly.).
Biplane: advance air unit based on Mario’s Sky Pop.
Passenger Plane: Air transport that can only carry a small number of infantry.
Sea
Racer: Cop on a high speed blooper armed with a giant mallet (Don’t ask where I got this idea). Good for hit and runs.
Mini-Sub: Based on Mario’s Sea Pop. Upgrade to surface and submerge (Affects what units it can hit.).
Ferryboat: Transports ground units. Upgrade increases hull armor.

Heroes (Note: Only the Player characters are in all multiplayer modes. You lose if a hero on your side dies, no matter what.)
Captain Jon Sunday: The character you play as in the Mushroom campaigns. While he/you can fight like a stronger Cop, the base (except for cannons.) will cease function if he’s not in the HQ to provide orders.
Chief Benjamin Toadser: Doesn’t actually appear as a unit in the game, but instead is Jon Sunday’s CO. Toadser is surprisingly aggressive for a Toad. Many fear that he will try to override the “defense only” rule and invade Dark Land.
Mario and Luigi: Rarely both in the same mission together. They are enhanced Undercover cops who can infiltrate more buildings and can even destroy those buildings after ten minutes. The Bros. will also appear in other forms at times, like Luigi in a cape and on a yoshi or Mario in the Sea Pop or Sky Pop.

The Koopa Troop

Pros/Cons:
In a twist of fate that surprises even myself, the Koopa Troop excels at navel battles more so then at land or air. Their Air Force is considerable with the return of the air ships and Jet fighters from SMB3, but their ground units are hopelessly weak if not used in large numbers. Strength in numbers is easy to do however, as they have the highest Pop Cap (a whopping 200!). Their base defenses are powerful although slow firing.
Structures
Castle: Koopa HQ
Fortress: Infantry training center.
Furnace: Allows Fire Bros. to be trained at Fortress.
School of Wizardry: Allows Magikoopas to be trained at Fortress.
Mega Fortress: Builds vehicles.
Cloud Fortress (A fortress on a cloud): Trains/builds air units.
Sea Fortress: Builds (You guessed it) sea units.
Pipe Factory: Allows Large Pipes and Venus Fire Traps to be built.
Large Pipes: Can be connected to different buildings to provide quick transportation between them (Useful if you have 2 bases that are far apart.). If a Mega Fortress is connected to a Cloud Fortress or Sea Fortress, the Cloud and/or Sea fortresses will be able to produce their big units. If connection between Fortress and Cloud/Sea Fortress is made, the smaller Air/Sea units can be upgraded.
Venus Fire Traps: Anti-personnel structures. Spews small fire balls that will kill almost any infantry unit in one shot. Can’t attack units that are right next to it.
Bullet Bill Launchers: Anti-armor weapon. Can’t be built until a Mega Fortress is. Can’t attack units that are right next to it.
Torpedo Ted Turrets: Anti-Submarine weapon. Can’t be built until a Sea Fortress is. Can’t attack units that are right next to it.

Units
Infantry
Hammer Bros.: You were expecting to see Koopa Troopas first on this list, weren’t you? Well Bowser, figuring he doesn’t want his army to be out done by the MP in training, decided that the Koopas should either take the time to become Hammer Bros. or stick to the civilian lifestyle. Of course, in one on one combat their still outdone by cops, but that’s besides the point.
Fire Bros.: The more powerful, but more expensive variation to the Hammer Bros.
Ptooie: Spits Spiked balls into the air.
Magikoopa: Most expensive infantry unit amongst the three sides, it’s the most useful ground unit in the Koopa Troop. It starts out with a basic attack spell that it can used repeatedly, but it has to be upgraded each time you want it to learn a new spell. The other spells are Lighting Strike (Splash damage), Shadow Shield (Increases defense of 5 units), teleportation (Short range) and Mind Control (Takes over one enemy unit). These take up Mana, which Magikoopas have a limit of and must go to the School to replenish.
Spinys: Slow moving infantry but has strong armor. Only comes from Lakitus
Mechakoopas: Pretty much like Spinys only superior in all stats. Only comes from Bowser.
Vehicles
Wooden Tank: Not much to say here, really.
Air
Jet Fighters: Wooden Jet fighters piloted by Rocky Wrenches. Attack method is throwing wrenches at other air units. Can be upgraded with a small cannon that launches cannon balls.
Lakitu: Attacks ground targets with Spiny Eggs. Upgrades allow the eggs to hatch into Spinys.
Air Ships: The big boys. They fire off Bullet Bills and cannonballs at an astonishing rate. Can be upgraded to transport ground units.
Sea
Cheep-Cheeps: Can attack both surface and submerge in close range combat, though they have an easier time fighting under water. They can fly for brief periods of time when upgraded.
Submarines (Based after the one in SM64’s Dire Dire Docks): Heavy armor and powerful against other submerged units and water based buildings.
Battleships: Like Air Ships only stuck on the ocean (If ships could talk, they called their airborne cousins showoffs). Are as effective at bombarding land units and structures as they are at the sea faring ones.
Transports: Nuff said.
Heroes
Bowser Jr.: Your character in the Koopa Campaigns. You can use his old scarf that transform him into Shadow Mario to evade enemies and break into buildings and cause general mayhem in them. You can also use the infamous Hammer Bros. suit if you prefer the bloodier approach, but don’t neglect your duties at the castle!
Bowser: Your old man er...turtle flies around in the family Koopa Kopter, Throwing out MechaKoopas and dropping large boulders on things. Sort of a Lakitu on Steroids!
Kamek: Really powerful Magikoopa elder.
Kammy: Flies around on a broom and shoots stuff. Don’t you wish you could do that?
The Super Tank: A massively huge tank that bigger than most buildings. Is seen only in front of Koopa Kastle in Dark Land.
Koopalings: Bowser Jr.’s seven older siblings all serve as top ranking commanders in the Troop and they display their power in their modified Air Ships called the “Doom Ships”. If seven is too many to keep track of, don’t worry as one of them is secretly planning to backstab the family and defect to...(drum roll please!)

The Four Kings alliance

Pros/cons:
The surprise players in this game, Goomba King, Big Bom-bomb, General Guy and Tatanga are dead serious on destroying both the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms. The collective strength of their forces is fairly good (125 cap.) despite the heavy casualties they sustained over the years. Anyone that has questioned why Tatanga is a Four Kings member quickly finds out it’s because of his technologically superior starships that are far more well armed and armored than even the Doom ships and since there’s plenty of Shy Guys and Bom-bombs to constitute the ground forces, he can have all of his minions focus on producing starships entirely. But for every great advantage, there’s a swift kick in the pants to take you down a notch and for the Four Kings it’s a pitiful navy and having only Chomps for base defense.

Structures:
Tower of Legos: HQ made out of oversized Legos. Note: May be renamed “Tower of colorful plastic building blocks”.
Toy box: Shy Guy home (generates Shy guys.)
Explosives Factory: This is where Bom-bombs are born.
Weapons Factory: The more advance ground weapons are built here. Explosives Factory must be built first.
Hanger: Tatanga’s starships are built here.
Sea Port: Sea units are made here.
Science Center: researches new technologies for the 4K alliance. Hanger can’t be built until this is.
Chain Chomps: Chews up infantry and can slow down vehicles. Very Short range. Must have Explosives Factory first. Their chains are replaced by fire when upgraded.

Units
Infantry
Shy Guys: Armed only with slingshots, their very effective. When you can put out stronger variations of “guys”, you can turn the basic ones into the desired units for less cost than to create a whole new batch.
Spear guys: Their Spears give them good attack range and adequate power.
Medi Guy: Field medic. Healing ability not as good as Field Nurse’s, but at least they still process some fighting ability.
Spy Guys: Can hide from others behind various trees, rocks, etc. Moves quickly & can infiltrate buildings.
Bom-bombs: One time only use.
Vehicles
Bom-bomb catapult: Long range artillery.
Toy Tank: Bombs for ground attack, lighting shooting light bulb for air
Sea
Boss Bass: Huge fish that carries units in it’s mouth underwater. (enemy from SMB3)
Alliance Frigate: Toy Box and Explosive Factory are needed to supply the crew and weaponry.
Air
Fly Guy: flies by means of a small propeller. Breathes fire at ground targets.
Sky Guy: Travels by balloon and drops Bom-bombs. Fly Guys in the level can be turned into these.
Starfighter: The speedy tactical strike fighter of Tatanga’s fleet. It’s rear is not as armored as the front or sides.
Carrier: Heavily armored transport that can carry all other units (mostly for protection as it is very slow).
Starcruiser: In terms of sheer power, this beats out all other units in the game. It’s also the most expensive and time consuming, so don’t get carried away with building too many of these.

Heroes
General Guy: Player Character. He’s more dedicated to his job than anyone else. When not hanging around the Tower of Legos, he’s cruising in his souped up Toy Tank!
Goomba King/ Big Bom-bomb: The only actual kings in the Four Kings Alliance, this half of the Quartet spends most of the time getting their new found kingdom up and running instead of managing their military, which they leave to Guy & Tatanga, whom they often communicate with for updates on how the war is going.
Tatanga: Placed in command of the Air and Space division, The once temporary ruler of Sarasaland hopes to get his revenge against Mario with his new Flagship, the Pagosu II.
Captain Shy Guy: A pirate captain whose been hired to raid ships from the other 2 factions. His ship is a stolen battle ship.
Wario & Waluigi: A pair of greedy brothers hired by 4KA for the purposes of eliminating the more important individuals of the enemy kingdoms.

Civilians
Overview: Toads, Koopas & Goombas live peacefully in their villages, well until an army comes to burn down their homes! Civilians obviously don’t take part in battles directly (I.E. can‘t be controlled by the player), but they can aid in the war effort in their own ways. Construction workers can be hired to help build your base, hurt units can be healed at a hospital, some people may donate Gold coins (adds to your amount) or baked goods (units that eats them gets a small increase in speed & strength) & the braver ones will fight back at anyone that attacks their house. In a few missions, a castle will be present & will be protected by guards, who are strong ground units that you sadly, can’t command (Hence their being listed here). On the downsize, some towns have a jail & the enemy may try to break some of their kind out, giving them a few free units.

Gold Coins
Gold coins are needed to build, train or research anything. They are scattered all over the place & can be picked up by any unit. There are also pipes and beanstalks leading to hidden, off screen areas filled with coins. Coins are instantly stored together so you won’t lose any a unit that been collecting them perishes.

Worlds:
Each world has it’s own distinct differences in terms of terrain, monsters that’ll attack anyone & amount of gold coins.

Grass Land: The calm, pleasant homeland of the Mushroom Kingdom. The numerous hills can affect battle greatly since those on high ground have longer attack range. The only monsters here are a few wild Piranha Plants.
Dark Land: Bowser’s turf. Coins are scarce, there are many pools of lava & the more remote regions are filled with Boo Buddies , Dry Bones & other undead inhabitants.
Desert Land: Vast sea of sand (& not very much water) with lots of hostile forms of life including Fire Snakes, Angry Suns & Pokeys. The Four Kings Alliance resides here.
Water Land: More water than land. The monsters are under water & are not as dangerous.
Ice Land: Not as much water & even fewer monsters.
Sky Land: No water period! Clouds are strong enough to support ground units & structures.
Giant Land: Let’s just say you really shouldn’t pick a fight with the locals!
Pipe Land: Lots & lots of pipes! Most lead to underground caverns (There are more gold coins to had here than any other world) but some can serve as shortcuts around the world.

Multiplayer
There are a number of options for multi[player play besides how many players can play. Standard maps don’t have civilians or heroes (besides the player characters) while the special scenario maps have specific scenarios that may involve heroes or civilians. When 3 or 4 players are in a single game, 2 of them can ally together (this is easier if their both using the same GCN as they can talk to each other & discuss strategy). Every so often, a new map can be downloaded from an official site.

Some new features and a modified control setup

Controls: Basic RTS controls adapted to a GC controller.
A: select unselected unit or building. Makes selected units fire at the unit or building that cursor is hovering over. Makes selected infantry units jump.
B: de-select current unit/building.
Control Stick: Move cursor (Hold A while moving to select multiple units). When units are selected, they will instantly move in the direction the stick is tilted (they won‘t stop moving until the stick is tilted in a different direction.
D-Pad: automatically select pre assigned team (Hold A and press a button on the D-Pad to create said team).
Hold X, Y or Z and press A: memorizes certain areas of the battlefields so you can instantly go there by pressing X, Y or Z.

Power-ups
Floating Question Blocks contain a number of different power-ups that can enhance certain heroes with new abilities. The Hero units lose these abilities if they have less than 50% health, regardless of how much health they had when they acquired them. The heroes that can use power-ups are Jon Sunday, Mario, Luigi, Bowser Jr. in Shadow Mario form, Wario & Waluigi (not counting heroes from unlockable factions).

Super Mushroom: Makes hero unit double in size & gives him increased attack & health ratings.
10 coins: Actually I don’t have a clue how many it should be because I haven’t figure out the actual costs for & availability of coins ( I couldn’t without play testing the game for real).
Fire Flower: Gives hero a powerful ranged fire ball attack.
Cape Feather: Gives hero the abilities of a Caped Cop.
Frog Suit: Decreases a hero’s speed on land but will allow him to travel through water at high speeds.
1-up Mushroom: There is a 1% chance of this item appearing instead of another power-up. If a hero who acquired this item dies, he’ll reappear at the location he began the mission at.

Unlockable factions
In addition to the 3 main factions, other factions can be unlocked for multiplayer. There are no campaign missions for these factions except for a tutorial level.

Ganon’s Army
Info: The 1st thing to say about this group is that instead of a base consisting of a bunch of different buildings, they have large castles that expand with each new section. Ganon’s Army has a high pop cap but very weak units. Probably better fighting at land than sea or air.

Team Rocket
Info: Rocket units can’t kill organic units & their own organic units are unkillable (instead, such units “Faint” for 10 minutes). There’s also a lot of randomness to the units they use. For example, a basic infantry unit can be Pinsir or a Charmeleon or a Pikachu or whatever. Same thing applies to their air units, sea units, human grunts (who have different weaponry) and mecha.

Orange Star
Info: The hero units of this faction are more useful for enhancing their fellow units more than for their own fighting abilities. They have few structures including no defensive ones.

All-Star Coalition
Info: An all hero unit faction. Great for those who like having an army of super powerful units but keep in mind not a single 1 of those heroes can die.
