I heard an interesting rumour about Tales of Graces. That they want to make a longer game. And their goal is around 70 hours. :O

I hope they take some of that intended time to delve into the characters' arcs. IT would be some good use of it, but if they get some ideas from Tales of Legendia, then that would be a good thing. I actually liked how Tales of legendia actually gave the other characters time in the limelight and wasn't pulling a "Tales of Destiny 2". Even during the "main" quest, there was build-up to the character quests and some other characters got to step in and out of the limelight. Other than the period where it was centered on someone else, no one in Legendia really spent the entire game in the background.

And a "Tales of Destiny 2" is when it's so centered on one or two characters the others are practically flat characters. Dawn of the new world got pretty bad in some areas, but Tales of Destiny 2 was utterly the worst. I wonder why the hell Nanaly and Loni were even there - they got the shaft. MAJORLY.

^ Legendia did put a lot of effort into the characters.

It's a shame I wanted to murder half of them. >_>

Anyway, the 70 hours, well it depends on how you look at it. ToS advertises '80 hours of compelling gameplay' on the box or something, but that's only if you do every single freaking sidequest the game has to offer and more.

It still only takes about 60 hours for a normal-ish runthrough, 50 with little sidequesting.

So do they mean 70 hours real actual storyline action, or 70 hours with half of it running around and doing extra stuff?

Don't get me wrong, I love extra stuff, I just want to clarify.

--

Speaking of Characters, well, I've only played ToS, ToA, ToS2, Vesperia, and a little bit of Legendia (though I watched my sister play through it all).

I think ToS and ToA had some of the best characters.

Vesperia had some pretty awesome people in it, like Yuri, and Karol and Raven were pretty dynamic and awesome. Still, the characters really weren't as in-debth as they are in other games. Like, the only part to Rita's personality, really, is her obsession with Blastia. That's it. Judith's is better, but not phenomenal. I LIKED the characters and I LOVED the game, but I think they weren't the best.

ToS and ToA had really good characters, in my opinion. Anise's character was particularly well-done, especially later on.

I'm probably really biased here but I think these two games did awesome jobs with their characters.

And Legendia delved into theirs a lot, but unfortunately, as I stated earlier, half of them made me want to strangle them or myself. Namely, the bubble-blower chick and Shirley. Ooooh, god, Shirley. *shudder*

I will agree with CL in some aspects, TOA and TOS both made some awesome characters. (although Anise bugs me)

I play the games for the characters, but it was disapointing in ToV that the only really developed charaters we're Yuri, Judith, Raven and Karel. (I forgave the game for being generally awesome)

I look forward to this game and thouroghly hope they do some awesome character development.

If I were them I'd make it so that the 70 hours would be the main quest. Tales of Legendia doesn't have that many running-around as Vesperia does and it topped aroudn 50 hours.

Rita really is one of the reasons Tales of Vesperia should ahve been longer. It feels like she was just unfinished.

^ I felt that way, too. It felt like there was some explanation waiting in the depths that didn't quite make it up in time for the deadline, or something. I kept waiting for some emotional trauma in her past that caused her everlasting obsession over Blastia, and when the game finished without one I was like WUT.

Also, Anise was annoying but I thought that she as a character was REALLY well developed. Especially, as I said, later on.

I think it needed more - Especially with how Alexei just felt like he came out of nowhere.

Hopefully the prequel film may clarify some of this.

Yeah, it felt kind of haphazard toward the end.

It was a really fun game. Some of the bits just felt very rushed, is all.

Spoiler Below
SERIOUSLY, wtf was up with that Raven thingie??? A freaking cavein and he appears twenty seconds later unharmed.

Yeah. I felt that Raven and Rita were pretty good in the skits, but if Rita gets any development in the skits I don't think that's a very good idea....Some people would just skip them because they wanna play the game. And a lot of the skits were kinda dull anyways.

But still SOME were just friggin hillarious. I made Sherbet in the Ice Floes and everyone was complaining about how cold it was and upgraded the Sorcerer's ring so raven had a few funny things to say. Raven's awesome.

Raven: "Well if the Sorcerer's ring could tell me what you're thinking, or see through your clothes, or make pretty girls fall in love with ol' raven-"
Rita: *tackles*
Raven: OW!
Rita: YOU JUST WANT IT FOR YOUR PERVERTED FANTASIES!!! Oooooooh that makes me so mad!!!
Yuri: uh....what would you want the sorcerer's ring to do now?
Raven: go back in time and shut me up.

I finally watched the phantasia anime. Chester is still amazing! And I know Emil was really whiny in tos2 but I think that he did have a pretty cool story. He doesn't exist and spends the game thinking that he's not who he thinks he is. A new for tales games. And Marta's personality is new for the ones that I've played. She's clingy and bubbly but for some reason you just want her to succeed. I've gotten all 3 endings and I love the one where you kill Marta. I prefer the tragic ending. But then I got the other 2 and was contented.

So with the 70 hours for tales of graces, has a release date been more clarified than winter 09? Cause the character is one of the most active in his fighting style. From what I've seen its less about what items you've got and hitting the enemy without getting hit. It also looks gorgous...(drool) I'm thinking that this could be what makes up for peoples letdown on tos2. I can't wait!

The look on his face says it all.

Emil is as unoriginal as they get!

He stole Luke Fon Fabre's backstory, Bruce Baner's mood swings, and Captain Basch from Dalmasca's character design.

^No, Ramza&Marche's. Baasch's abs are painted on and he looks like he's made out of porcelain or really really dirty.

I mean from a tales game. Yes Luke's back story but Luke isn't near as whiny. I mean the more along the lines of is he good or evil. Second didn't play through all of Abyss though. Didn't like it. So I could be wrong. If so. My bad.

At least Luke was cool for the first three hours or so of gameplay. He's emo and retarded for the rest, but at least he's awesome for the beginning.

Emil is just like ooohhhh every1 haetz me the only friend i have is a creepy stalker chick and some weird kratos knockoff OH NVM IM COOL AND BADASS WOO oh im lame again RARGH waah RARGH waaah *chokes alternate self*

Sigh. I wish they'd stuck with the original characters, or at least put SLIGHTLY more effort into the new ones. I mean really guys.

Yes Luke was a whiny spoiled brat for hte first couple hours of Tales of the abyss, but he stops being whiny until the absorption gate when others have worse stuff happen (eg Natalia), then unlike almost every other character period, actually reverts. Usually, it's "oh I've learned my lesson" or "I accept my shadow and faults!" and they never angst again. No one changes their way overnight.

I just didn't like Abyss' storyline. I got bored. Legendia was so much worse though. I'm not saying any of their games are perfect. Symphonia got a little ridiculous and over the top at times. Tos2 had the lack of maps and was so boring at the beginning. I only continued due to my great respect to the first one. Oh, and Lloyd being the bad guy.

Yet again I guess I'll try to finish Abyss. Nobody has a super awesome character at first. Excluding maybe Chester from phantasia. He's just epic.

Oh, and the biggest problem I had with the characters of tos2 was that you couldn't level up the originals. So whereas my over leveled Emil and Marta are lvl 102 my Sheena and Regal are 28. Its frustrating because some of the endings with the originals are funny. Mainly the one with Marta, Sheena, and Emil. Where Marta says Emil was looking at Sheena's chest. I choked on what I was eating the first time I heard that. Plus there is no over-limit.

Isn't it a video game cliche that the characters magically change a part of themselves over a dramatic 5 to 10 minute cut scene\fight?

^^ Oh, Luke's character DEVELOPMENT is awesome. He's just obnoxious, that's the problem.

OOHHH I KILLED PEOPLE OOOHHHHHH WOE IS ME OOOHHHHHHHH WAHH WAHH *slitwrists*

Still, Anise is awesome enough to make up for it. :{P

^How far did you get in Abyss?
