Sonic Returns In New 2D, HD Game

Sonic Returns In New 2D, HD Game - Sonic - Kotaku

Quote:
It appears that Sega may actually have been listening. After years and years of (mostly) awful 3D Sonic games, the company is now teasing something called "Project Needlemouse", billed as a return to the Sonic of old.

"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay" says Sega of America's Ken Balough. "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."

The teaser clip's tagline reads "Speed returns, in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up", with Balough confirming the game will, rather than be a retro-remake, be an all-new game built in HD.

It'll be out in 2010. No word on platforms, but the "HD" bit certainly narrows it down. What do you think, Sega fans? Do you dare to hope?

I pray to God this isn't a joke. Check the link for a quick teaser.

This is great news!
I really hope this means that Eggman will be appearing in his original outfit.

What's so bad about the 3D Sonic games, though? I've only played Sonic Adventure, and it was really good.
And I don't think that being HD will narrow anything down. Didn't Wario Land: Shake have HD sprites?

Aside from the initial rush of hearing this news, I did almost immediately fear Sega would somehow screw this up.

If they can make a good 2D Sonic game, like the original Genesis trilogy (and Knuckles), that'll be fantastic. But if they mess this up... well, rats to us.

I'm defaulting to 'cautious pragmatism' on this one, considering all their ****-ups in the past.

But if it doesn't suck, then, it should be fun to play.

If you don't like Sonic then why post here?

The originals while not incredible by today's standards were pretty great for its time, and can stand up pretty well to alot of today's sh*tstains...

When it comes to a good and recent 2D Sonic game, Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS is pretty great. I felt it was a little lacking, but all around was a great game.

As far as 3D Sonic Games though, I never found anything too wrong with them, and found them to be all around decent games that you could enjoy for at least a little while.

The main problem I had with them were the controls, they got pretty sloppy...

Me: No, don't do a homing attack into the pi-
Shadow: Damn! Not here!
Me: ****

(I can't speak for Sonic the Hedgehog on the 360, Secret Rings, or Unleashed as I've never played them. The only thing I can say is that Unleashed looks great...)

This looks promising I guess...

I really have to disagree on the current opinion of the Sonic games though. Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog most certainly are not "incredibly f**king terrible". They were more of a 7, 6 or 5 than a 2 or 3, and It's pretty bad that no one else sees it that way.

Also, Sure, Sonic 06 is terrible, but Sonic Unleashed is not the same quality as Sonic 06 by any means, and anyone who thinks that is f**king insane.

If anything, Sonic was improving.

It'll probably be a good game that many Genesis Sonic fans will bitch about following it's release.

I don't really consider myself much of a Sonic fan anymore after playing 3 and not loving it like everyone else does.

Everything post-Adventure wasn't bad, just not as good. It was decent, I suppose. Mediocre at worst.

I always felt that when it came to replicating the original Genesis feel, the Sonic Advance series had most of what made the 16-bit games so good. Sonic Rush was a small step down, but still had the same fun formula.

As for this new game, I'm waiting to see how it's going to shape out. If it looks like anything I remember from the Genesis, then this is definitely going on my watch list.

I'm definately skeptical, though I will buy the game. I collect every Sonic game possible, that is. I'm just currently missing Sonic Pinball Party, and that's it.

Maybe I'm an old Genesis geezer.

I just want a Sonic game where you can actually run around levels SUPAFAST. The last Sonic game I bought (Secret Rings) almost had that feel, although it was really bogged down.
