"Slots": the 'Limit Break' when they can't think of a better one?

Now don't get me wrong, Slots are a perfectly fine Limit Break/Desperation/Overdrive/(whatever), but looking at who has and uses them, I have to admit I am confused by the choices sometimes. This isn't about Setzer using Slots, honestly of all the characters who have them (not counting Lady Luck) he makes the most sense, as his character class is in fact a 'Gambler', but from there it just seems to veer off and get stranger and stranger.

Cait Sith gets Slots as his Limit Break, which is admittedly a little weird, as he's a robot cat riding a moogle controlled by some reclusive scientist . . . I really don't get how this combination says 'Gambler', but I suppose its forgivable, it doesn't specifically NOT say gambler, and he also has Dice as a Limit Break, it just seems a little odd.

Next though we have Seplhie who uses the Slot system, but seriously, Selphie was the little energetic girl archtype, she uses nun-chucks for no real reason and had as much personality as Pheobe from the Magic School Bus ("We never fought time sorceresses at my old school!") I really don't get how this type of character was given the Slot Limit break, she isn't even old enough to legally gamble . . . only thing I can think of is they really didn't plan on anyone using her.

After that we got Wakka with was given the Slot Overdrive, and again this seems like another case of "we couldn't think of anything better to give him." I mean, he's an island native Blitzball player from a Blitzball team that's very unlucky, they've lost every game they've played, as well as a religious zealot when he started the game, what combination of these character traits says "Gamber"? I'm not saying Selphie or Wakka's Limit Breaks were bad, but they just seemed poor choices, Slots are the Limit Break for a gambler class, to which Selphie and Wakka were clearly not. And its not like the rest of the game was poorly contrived, Squall cut things up with his gunblade, Zell used beat-up moves, Quistis learned things (she's a teacher), where in FFX Auron used Bushido, Lulu used super casting, Yuna summoned a grand summon, all of these Limit Breaks at least made sense to their character class, more or less.

I just think they should have spent a little more time thinking of an appropriate Overdrive for the characters, and that after Setzer, the association of Slots to the person using seemed to devolve more and more until it just seemed tacked on at the last minute because they couldn't think of anything better.

Cait Sith is found working at the Gold Saucer when you meet him. Makes a bit of sense, it's a gambling place.

Well Tifa also had a lot of other Limit Breaks that did make sense, am aware she also had a slots, but she also had a lot of grappling Limit Breaks, like Zell, so her's was more of an anomily, but her overall Limit Breaks still seemed to make sense to her class as a Grappler/Monk.

I don't really see why people can't like both of them. Aerith is awesome, with incredible limit breaks and is easily the best mage in the game, and Tifa kicks ass. Show them both love.

I meant character-wise. I did like her in Crisis Core, but she kinda feels more like a story element than a real character in FF7.

Maybe I have a vendetta against the Slots because I'm so bad at them as well, I'm never able to match them up on purpose like some people can. Setzer its forgivable, you have so many characters anyway, but bleh on the ones with fewer character choices!

Selphie didn't have a slot machine function (and Wakka? I don't remember.); it's just a random attack/spell instead of trying to line up anything. It's still called "slots", but I guess that's because the localization team got lazy and used a straight-up transliteration of the katakana?

Slots = Serving drinks?

Bar =/= Casino

And yes, Wakka did have the real kind of slots, where you have to stop them on all 3 of the same to get the biggest bonus.

Know what is a worse Limit Break than Slots? Blue Magic. Blue Magic should be available in every battle like in FF5 and 6. Quistis and Kimhari got screwed.

And so did the blue chef monster from FF9.

But Quistis had very little gameplay so who cares.

Blue Magic is annoying; to the depths of Hell with it!

I don't know while it's a pain to get it can be damn usefull to have. Off the top of my head some ways in witch Blue Magic is useful inclue but are not limited too, Relm's controll strago's lore (witch should be MP free but meh.) and Gau's rages can allow use of the following; free castings of life3/reraise, giga and megavolts, fire and ice 2, cat scratch (and the horribly broken Wind god Gau set up.) along with Leo's Shock ability. Given all that blue magic seems usefull to me.
