Fans Threaten to Boycott Sonic 4... by Purchasing Sonic 1?

Fans Threaten to Boycott Sonic 4... by Purchasing Sonic 1?

Quote:
Sega hopes to rejuvenate their flagship franchise with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, but one group in particular isn't on board: deranged Sonic fans. Destructoid discovered an internet petition by a sect of gamers who believe -- based entirely on the exceedingly brief footage that's been leaked -- that their money would be better spent on downloadable versions of the original Sonic.

That's right -- they intend on punishing Sega by throwing money at them. Here's their spiel in all its unedited glory:

"Fans of the sonic series are like most sega fans, we want their old games brought back to the glory days when sega was pretty much the power in video games. Seeing the gameplay of sonic 4 has made many of us realize what we already knew, Sonic 4 will simply not be anywhere near as good as the original sonic games. Either way, We will decide to finally show sega what the fans truly want. A real sonic 4, as long as sonic 4 stays the way it is, we will not buy it, we will in fact buy sonic 1 on release in protest of sonic 4, till we end up with a re tool, or change, we want sonic in hd, not sonic RUSH HD. We will not buy a future sonic game, till we get a true successor to sonic 1/2"

Whatever your opinion on Sonic's upcoming 2D adventure, you'd be hard-pressed to find much logic in their proposal. Never mind the fact that, by definition, these Sonic fans have almost certainly played through the original Genesis game already -- probably on several platforms. And what message, exactly, will Sega get if people march in droves to buy the nearly 20-year-old Sonic the Hedgehog instead of Sonic 4? It's sure to be about as effective as shopping at Sam's Club because you're boycotting Walmart.
For some reason I feel like these fans are about as old as Sonic 1.

Hmmm.... Maybe they should have waited to see more footage... :/ I`m willing to bet that only three people have joined... That`s being generous.

Huh? What?

Are they complaining about up-to-date graphics? I don't see what they're complaining about...

While I dislike the rehashing of the Sonic 1 boss in Sonic 4, I consider actions like this to be absurd.

I love how people are boycotting games for the stupidest of reasons.

People boycotted L4D2 because they want L4D1 stuff.

And now people are going to try boycotting Sonic 4 because they don't want 3d graphics?

Because obviously, we want everything to be like the 1990's, with Sonic in a 2d sprite, and everything is covered in delicious nostalgia.

This is why everything is destined to suck in 2010 and onward, because it was done better in 2d and in the 90's, which is where everything should stay.

Uh...what? I agree with everyone else, this is stupid.
Anyway, from what I've seen, the Sonic 4 looks like it's gonna be to the 16-bit games as NSMBWii was to the NES Super Mario games. Some people are gonna hate for the purpose of hating, it seems.

I thought they were boycotting because of a lack of new stuff in L4D2. Until Valve revealed the new stuff and they stopped. Unless there's a new boycott I'm not aware of...?

The irony is Sonic 3&K's sprite was heavily based on a 3D model, just a step or two below rendered models and just shaped by one instead.

As a result, it only makes sense that the next step is 2.5D.

The only annoyance I have is if the new game has so much rehashed junk that it feels not new.

That'd just be boring.

Then you see in several Sonic hacks, people implementing homing attack and it being 'cool.'

Hypocrites.

Green eyes... his eyes are too small to notice the difference much, in the old school games.

And when the hell was this exactly? Did I just slip into some kind of alternate reality where Nintendo never existed?

It was around the same time where apparantly Sonic was more popular than Mickey Mouse

Which, even after hearing it twice still throws me for a loop.

No, you were just a Mario fan at the time.

Sonic, around 1994, was more popular than Mickey Mouse (determined by asking people to identify various characters and Sonic being more identified than Mickey) but that's still a net 0 to the Nintendo fans at the time.

SEGA never really surpassed Nintendo, but for a time, it had a lot of fans of its own.

That was Mario. Mario was the one who was deemed more popular than Mickey Mouse.

Maybe I really have slipped unwittingly into an alternate reality. I'm gonna go check my copy of True Grit and make sure John Wayne is still the guy on the DVD cover......

No, it's Sonic.

If you look for the Sonic the Hedgehog Retrospective it states that Sonic was more popular than Mickey in a Survey, not Mario.

Though, Mario may have also been more popular than him.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
In the 1990s, a national survey found that Mario was more recognizable to American children than Mickey Mouse.[74]
From Neatorama:

Quote:
Mario is the most famous character in the history of video games, and perhaps is the most famous character ever. In a 1990 poll by Marketing Evaluations, Mario was found to be more popular (and recognizable) among children than Mickey Mouse.
From the New York Times:

Quote:
Super Mario (the wide-eyed plumber who is more popular among children than Mickey Mouse, according to the Q-ratings of Marketing Evaluations, a company that measures the familiarity and popularity of celebrities and products)
Mario being more popular than Mickey Mouse is a well-known bit of trivia about the character. I thought every gamer knew it.
