I had to beat him up many times so I can buy the 4000 dollar Lode Sword from that merchant before continuing on with the story.

It eventually got to the point where I would be able to one-shot him I think cause I was leveling a bunch of times in the process.

Did you guys know that they planned to have an ending where Gato helped you defeat Lavos? It was cut due to time, but some pieces of the ending remain, deep inside the game code
