If he bought the TV and Playstation 3, he can go and pick up any game he wants. It's not going to damage the property, there also isn't a contract that he signed telling him he can't play M rated games when he comes of age.

There's a reason the ESRB Ratings exist, and if Leo wants to buy the game (Even if I don't recommend it) He has the right. If they don't their child going with the latest non-dangerous trend, they should have reconsidered having children in the first place, imo.

Vgfian already clarified the point I was making, so comments like these do not serve much point. I will try cats instead.

Renter: I have a cat.
Landlord: No cats allowed.
Renter: But I'm an adult and I bought the cat with my own money!
Landlord: Ummm... What's your point?

Hopefully Vgfian will not have to explain that one.

No disrespect intended; I just thought I'd point that out.

None taken. I already stated that I am not very picky about that sort of thing, and if you were my kid, I would let you play it. Your parent's views are clearly more strict than mine, however, so you should respect that and play something else.

I would recommend Infamous or Prototype. They have the same 'go anywhere, do anything' feel to them, and although they are violent, I do not remember any sexual content in them. I realize that playing as a superhuman is a little different than GTA, but the free running spirit is still there.

Thank you for not taking that the wrong way. BTW, I actually respect them and love them very much. I'm just perplexed (said it again LOL) about the whole "Over-17-But-Still-Not-Allowed-To-Get-It-Or-Even-Rent-It" thing, that's all. It's...perplexing (AAAAARGH!! Must stop saying that!)

Thumbs down

Edit: Actually, let's do this nicer. You're basically making chocolate to be exactly like a nice pile of **** because they're both brown. It isn't.

What do cats and satellite dishes have to do with video games that have no physical impact on the property anyway

Edit 2: I'm not so much arguing over who's right, I'm just pointing out how stupid it is to compare it to a satellite dish.

Oh, hey, perfect new PDN.

An oversight

^I did not see your post back there. The answer is simple - Leo's parents do not like the sexual content, but (if I understand correctly) violence/horror does not bother them as much. I do not think he will have nightmares from it. You said it would give children nightmares, and you are probably right - but we are not discussing a child. We are discussing an adult who has chosen to continue housing with his parents.

^^I am not comparing cats or satellites to video games. I am simply pointing out that becoming an adult and spending your own money does not make someone exempt from following rules. I apologize - I was not very clear in my explanation. I will spell it out below, not because you need it spelled out, but rather that I do not want to be misinterpreted any further:

Buying the cat with your own money and being an adult does not make it okay for you to go against the landlord's rules.

Paying for your own apartment and being an adult does not make it okay for you put up a satellite when there is a 'no satellite' rule.

Being nineteen and buying your own games does not make it okay to break your parent's 'no games with sexual content' rule.

I realize that in my examples a contract is involved, but in the parent-child relationship, a contract should not be needed. After reading this topic, however, I may go write one for them to sign.

might as well turn off the tv too if they're worried about sexual content, everything's sex on there

^ Good point.

^^You are correct. That is what parental controls are for.

^I am familiar with it, I used it a lot as a kid.

again this crosses over into ridiculous controlling parenting territory at age 18+

i'm trying to remember what i learned in psychology last semester, there were like 3-5 types of parenting and i'm trying to remember them

Umm.. I'm going to take a wild guess at what this is... WAY TOO STRICT? I was allowed to play GTA when I was 8.

i think authoritarian was the extremely strict one. the rational one was democrative, where the kid had a say in what he could and could not do

I assume you are referring to his parents and not me, as I have already stated twice that I would just let him play it.

A bit much

^I agree that that is a bit much, though I personally would not call it ridiculous.

But yes, very strict.

This isn't a rational comparison. Pets can cause damage to a house or apartment, and satellite dishes have to be affixed to an external surface to achieve reception. Your videogame argument is a matter of opinion. The law isn't on their side, either, it's on the owner's side.

Children cannot be legally bound to a contract, nor can adults who signed such a contract before they were legally adults.

IMO, you shouldn't have children unless you're prepared to let them make their own decisions, and not with the clause "as long as I approve". Instead of treating your dependent as a rational adult, and encouraging them to grow by asking them to sit down and discuss it with you, you're only promoting immaturity and your own superiority complex that you've unfairly developed due to the parent/child relationship.

To be rendundant: What everyone else said.

Alternately, get a similar, lower-rated game.

You could get Saint's Row 2.

It's like GTA, but much more lighthearted (If you can believe that >_>)

It has its own little charm I've heard.

Bingo

^^Excellent suggestion. I completely forgot about that one. Lots of fun, and it does not carry the controversial GTA title. More than likely, your parents have never even heard of it.
