19 and STILL not allowed to buy GTA

This probably sounds stupid to you guys, but I'm 19 and STILL not allowed to buy GTA. I had the exact same problem 7 years ago when I was "Fusion" on here (if anyone remembers or cares), but that was understandable since I was only 12. I thought I would finally have my day after I turned 17, but sadly my hope was in vain. I am the correct age to play M-rated now but my parents still won't let me use my OWN MONEY and buy it. The reason being all the sexual content and prostitutes. I tried to explain that it's entirely skippable and that I have no interest in sexual content, but still they refuse. I'm very perplexed as to why they still refuse after all these years, especially since I lead a responsible life (no sex, drugs, smoking, alcohol) and have a part-time job.

Option 1. You're an adult, get it anyway.

Option 2. It's just a crappy game, accept that and move on.

Grow a spine and buy it. It's not like you're buying porn. Besides, that comes for free on the internet and you're on it right now = 1000 times worse.

Bee tee dubs, there are prostitutes and drug dealers and gangsters IRL. You gonna give that up too because you might OMG meet a "real" prostitute?

I'd say sneak buy it, and sneak it in the house, or get a friend to buy it for you and get them to sneak it in the house.

But guessed you tried this.

Tell them you're 19 and you're free to make your own decision.

If you have money, buy it and tell them they can't tell you what not to do.

If you don't have money, get money than refer to above.

Well, there's a lot of misinformation out there about game content, and parents can be really susceptible to it. Like, speaking personally, my ma forbad me from playing 'Mortal Kombat' when I was a kid because she'd heard it had rape bonus levels from some damn place.

My advice would be to appeal their decision rationally. Perhaps offering to rent the game and play it solely under their supervision would help---they'd get to see for themselves what kind of content the game entails. As long as you're on your best behaviour and steer clear of hookers and strip clubs, you might win your parents over.

I wouldn't recommend buying it on the sly. You know your parents best---if you disobey them in this situation and they find out, are they the type to just grit their teeth and let it slide, or would they flip out, make with the 'you live under our roof, you play by our rules' speech, and take the game/console away?

It is their house; therefore it is their set of rules, and you should respect that. Just had to say that. Otherwise, everything Boo said.

Option #3: Respect your parent's wishes and find a different game.

Screw that! If you have the money, and you really want it, you're legally at the age to buy M Rated Games and they can't take it away.

That being said, GTA4 is kind of a low point compared to most games, since it threw out most of the humor for a more realistic look and style. You could probably pick another M Rated game, like Borderlands or Bioshock.

Perhaps you will understand my perspective better once you have children of your own.
I CAN and WILL confiscate any game in my house that I do not approve of, and no amount of whining or claims of adulthood will suddenly cause me to change my mind. My children do not determine the rules for my house - I do.

Leo is a little older and there is a difference in his situation, yes, but is he paying the mortgage? It does not sound like it. If my kids are still living with me when they are nineteen and they want to give me some stupid 'but I'm a man now!' speech, I will have absolutely no problem taking the entire Xbox away and telling them to find their own freaking apartment.

That said, I am pretty lax about video game standards, so I doubt I will be getting any sort of complaint any time soon.

Tazy does make a good point though - Bioshock is a much better buy.

^ If he pays his parents rent to live there, and brought the TV and X-box himself. (Which buy that time in his live he should be paying his parents something to live there, and the rest) then he should be allowed to play what he likes.

^^ Agreed. But he made no mention of paying rent.

Also, you pay rent for an apartment, yet some apartments do not permit satellite dishes, only cable tv. They will not listen to claims of adulthood either. Parents are not the only ones who have rules about what is allowed and what is not, and paying rent does not necessarily make one an exception.

For the record, if I have a nineteen year old renting his own room from me, I would let him play whatever he wants.

Leo, do you have younger siblings? Because it may be your parents are more worried about them seeing it than you.

^^ No, I'm an only child, so the whole "Don't-Corrupt-Your-Brother/Sister" parental reasoning gets thrown helluva far out the window in my case.

^^^^ No rent, but yes I did buy the T.V. and the Playstation 3 (why did everyone assume I have a 360?).

Oh yes, I forgot how similar a giant satellite dish is to a game that has blood in it. They're like the same thing!

His point was that rules are rules, no matter how much of an "adult" you are.

As far as your sarcasm goes, it's unhelpful to your cause.

no, a huge satellite dish in an apartment setting really isn't comparable to a video game that has blood in it (oh no!!!!)

It's kind of ironic that a responsible parent such as yourself suggests a game that allows you to ATTACK DEMONICALLY-POSSESSED 8 YEAR OLD GIRLS...................................RIGHT AFTER KILLING THEIR "DADDIES"!!!!!!

No disrespect intended; I just thought I'd point that out.

bioshock is probably a lot worse for a child than grand theft auto could ever be!

(unless you enjoy giving your children nightmares)
