Have any of you ever had your vocal cords examined? If so, I could use a pep talk--I'm seeing an ENT sometime in the near future about all the vocal problems I've been having lately, and because of my strong gag reflex I'm not too keen on having things stuck down my throat. Do you actually feel anything?

Actually you won't feel much because this type of procedure is normally performed one of two ways. Either by applying a slight anastigic (sp?) to the patient so that the patient is asleep during the examination & process OR they can choose to simply give you a type of muscle relaxer that will widen the esophigal area of your throat decreasing the risk of a gag reflex. You shouldn't be too worried about it though. This procedure is pretty safe and isn't too intracite. Think of it as a close up exray of your throat except they will be putting a small video camera and light down your throat instead of just scanning your neck with a machine.

My little brother had this done when he was really young and my son had one not too long ago, his vocal cords keep smashing against each other because he can't judge the volume of his words very well, he continualy yells in the middle of a word because of his infantile frustation of trying to speak like the adults around him while lacking the proper speech skills. Poor little guy gets too excited some times and starts yelling out things he should normally just be speakin out.

So just take a deep breathe and know that you can't be seriously harmed from a procedure like this unless your docotor is a severe idiot....in which case I would recommend seeing another doctor.
