What do you guys think? It'd look better if I could find a way to take out the grittiness.

Did you scan the picture? If you did, try scanning at a higher DPI (200-300 should be good). That will scan it at a higher resolution and should get rid of the grittiness.

Also, if you have Gimp or Photoshop, you could try tweaking the colors a bit using Levels and Curves to give it a cleaner, sharper look.
