I've been hearing crap like that for 26 years, btw, so once I get past the initial resentment it's just funny to me that it's been so done in. ![]() Quote:
![]() Well.. literally. I mean, it probably specifically refers to either a stable master or farmer. Not literally, that would be scheuermeister, if scheuer means barn or stable. I think it originally translated to shire in the english language, so farmer would make more sense. It could also mean landowner, if that's the case. Shoy-er-man or Shoo-er-man? Because the former would be how you'd say it in German. And I'm pretty sure it would mean "Shyer Man." Scheune is Barn, not Scheuer. But I'm pretty limited in my German knowledge, so I also could be very wrong. Last edited by Marilink; 12-26-2009 at 10:30 AM. |

And man, my surname used to be a super common english name, so the whole NO ONE REMEMBERS HOW TO SPELL EITHER OF MY NAMES now (the double-E in "Ashlee" is some crazy issue, even for 60% of my family) is kind of funny. Infuriating, but funny. I'll be using a pen name when I'm published, since without familiarity with German, no one can say Scheuerman without mass confusion. "SKOO-ER-MAN? SHER-ER-MAN? SKER-MAN? WHO'S THAT? I DON'T KNOW ANY BOOKS WITH THAT NAME." Yeah, no thanks. |

The word "scheuer" translates from German to English seperately as "mousier" or "shy" - but that's case sensitive to a lowercase "s". I have seen a note also that as part of a phrase, Scheuer- means "scrubber". The case sensitive "Scheuer" translates according to many sites to barn, although I'm not quite certain about the context - it might not be that it means "barn" so much as having to do with barns. From a Geneological perspective, it's likely either in corelation to a person who lived in close proximity to a barn or grainery, or an official responsible for accepting tithes of harvest. Another site claims it to mean a person living in a hut(or more likely, barn), although that doesn't sound like a particularily reason to take on the title as a family name. There's also apparently a popular phrase using the "shyer"- mit scheuer Furcht erfüllen - or to strike a person full of shyness - or awe. All considered, though, after looking through many sites, it either refers to a person living in close proximity to a tithe granary, or a tithe collector. Topographical names are particularily common, so either one is likely. Last edited by Cosmonautical; 12-27-2009 at 08:55 AM. | |

I learned a little bit just looking that stuff up, which really tossed the idea of it relating to a stable out the window. There's also the possibility that it's not our original family name at all, and it's just something that was misspelled or mis-heard by the americans taking names at the time that our family immigrated - back around the beginning of the 1900's. |
