Question Microsoft Silverlight

Okay. Windows 7 gurus, help! After extensive research Googling the crap out of it, I still have no clue what it is, except for a vague notion of it being a graphics editor or something that businesses benefit from. When I open it, I get a menu that looks like a settings page. I click thru all the little sub items, hit ok, and the thing closes with nothing happening. It doesn't show up in my taskbar or the little item dock thing in the bottom right or anything.

Curiosity got the best of me. Anyone wanna enlighten me?

It's in the first line at Wikipedia, actually:

Microsoft Silverlight is an application framework for writing and running browser plug-ins or other rich Internet applications, with features and purposes similar to those of Adobe Flash.

That means it's like an SDK for developers, it's basically a reference library for multimedia plugins so you don't have to write every bit of one yourself. It's a tool to aid you in creating things like the widgets.

I read the Wiki article and all I understood was that it was an Adobe competitor. So it's used to run web apps, basically? I only found it because I was bored and decided to explore all the programs that my netbook came loaded with. It might be interesting to play around with...
