How do you get 5 stars?

I'm trying to get the achievements where you get 5 stars on all songs. I keep getting 96% on this one song but it only gives me 4 stars. So I was wondering, how do you get 5 stars? Is it based of your hit percentage? Please comment back.

Percentage has very little to do with it. It's better to get big streaks, particularly on parts with a lot of chords, because that way you get a higher score and a higher average score multiplier, which are (I believe) the factors that get you more stars. So you can get five stars on a song where you completely screw up the solo as long as you get huge streaks on the verses and such. (Before I Forget comes to mind.)

I found some sort of formula on GameFAQs, but it didn't seem like something you could use while playing, so I didn't post it. You can look it up if you want.

For Guitar Hero I and II, it was based entirely on your score. It's compared against the "base rate" of the song, where you hit every note and hold every phrase for full length at 1x multiplier.

Three stars for completing the song, four stars for doubling the base rate or more, five stars for tripling the base rate or more. The average multiplier doesn't matter, but it's a good indicator for how off you are from getting the 3x the score for the five star. Ideally, you'd want 4x throughout the song and save star power for the areas with lots of notes and lots of chords; losing your multiplier is bad, so if at all possible don't spread your mistakes throughout the song (that would result in a measly 1x/2x throughout the song).

I've read that it's different for GH3, though I could be wrong. It's hard to tell when you're actually playing.

I checked some FAQs and all they list is a score cut-off for 5 stars. ¯\(º o)/¯

Well, here's the one I was looking at.

Whatever. Either way, the best method is to get big streaks and not worry as much about screwing up the hard parts, since percentage is less important than average score multiplier.
