Guitar Hero 3 PC help needed please - VGF

Does anyone know how to fix a black fretboard issue? I've done everything from patch to 1.1... lower my resolution and graphics options to the lowest to the highest... calibrate... nothing works!
I have played this game on xbox, so I know how it's supposed to look with the fretboard and the notes coming down towards you... but this is totally black as if it's a cutout and not there.
When I press alt-tab to go to windows I can see the notes for a second... but returning leaves me with the same result.

My system is as follows:
Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.2Ghz
4 Gig 800 mhz Corsair DDR2 Ram
ABIT IP35 Pro, Windows XP service pack 3
Dell 24" Widescreen 1,000:1, 1920x1200, 12ms
Samsung LNT4081, 500,000:1, 1920x1080, 4ms
Logitech 5.1 e5300 THX certified speakers
Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty 64mb sound

From what I've heard, XP isn't great to be running GH3 on. Unfortunately, you may have to at least upgrade to Vista. Even so, however, the PC version is known for being pretty laggy, even when you surpass minimum requirements by quite a bit.
