Let me begin this simply: the way you want to fight is not to the accepted standard of the Gunjin, and is not a good way to gain respect. This has nothing to do with the supposed 'power level' of your character. Whether your character struggles to lift a small pumpkin or benchpresses mountains is irrelevant. The rules and accepted standards for the Gunjin are laid out in the handily stickied rules topic. I'm not sure if you've read it or not, the way you've been writing. You could be just trying and not there yet for all I know, or you could really just be ignoring the rules. It's difficult to tell at this point. The nature of the Gunjin is as a writing of battles forum. If you just want to type an attack and have it deal damage that you choose, you want the battle board. If you want to write- really write, which is to say, assemble words with the intention of conveying an idea or an image to someone (which, IMNSHO, is the entire point of writing anyway)- then this is the place to be. There's a reason that only some of the general VGF people actually post here more than once in a blue nuclear moon made of brie. One of the major rules you seem to be having trouble with is the rule that those in a battle with one another are of equal total capability. This is, unfortunately, an extremely important rule. One character may be faster than the other, and the other stronger than the one, but overall both characters are going to be equal. The way *I* prefer to do this, when possible, is to bring into a fight a character who I think of as having the same level of overall power that I think of my opponent's character as having. Frequently, this isn't how things work out, in which case, it's up to each battler to 'power up' their character to equal the other one, in ways subtle or not so subtle. Let's look at your fight with Metal Man in this regard. To begin with, when he 'powers up' into a demon, you state his power and speed and whatall are multiplied by ten. Well, his abilities aren't laid out in numbers anyway. Mathematically, his abilities are 'x'. Suddenly, his abilities are '10x'. What 'x' is, we don't know to begin with, don't learn, and may well never know. What you've done there is the same as me telling you that normally my character can lift five wolds, where a wold is a certain amount of weight. Suddenly, my character triggers an ability that makes her able to lift fifty wolds. But at no point did I tell you what a wold is, so you really have no clue at all how much she can lift. It's much the same with your descriptions. Rael is Rael. You say nothing to indicate what he looks like. As far as anyone's concerned, he might as well not exist. There's no way to know anything about him. Worse yet, his sword is 'a sword'. There are dozens of different kinds of swords in common use in the world today, and you use each of them differently, and they each have different effects on things based on their weight, length, whether they're jagged, wave-bladed, leaf-bladed, or straight, and if they're made for stabbing, slicing, or chopping. Because Metal Man doesn't know what your sword is supposed to do, he can't write it doing anything- it's like asking someone who's been blind from birth to describe 'blue'. Anything he says would be entirely guessing, then leaving him open to you saying 'no that's not what I meant', in which case you're going to wind up describing it *anyway*. Most of us like to save time and describe these things in the first place. The same goes for the area you fight in, who you bring to fight, and most especially the attacks you make. "He swung his sword" could be anything from an overhand chop, to a wild sweep, to a carefully aimed and precise cut. If you don't describe what it is- and this is the point Metal Man and I were trying to make- you're basically giving your opponent complete control, because they've got to decide what it is they're dealing with. Since battles are by nature competitive to some degree, it's pretty natural for your opponent to then take advantage of it and assume you're taking whatever the worst option is. As far as the commentary thing I was doing, you seem to have completely missed that I was doing it as much to make fun of Metal Man's errors or strange choices as yours, and more than either of them, to just sort of get an idea out I'd had for a while of parodizing the whole pro-wrestling commentator thing. I think it's ridiculous that there's an assumption you need someone describing something as you're staring at it happening, and I emphasized that by choosing a battle that wasn't clear and breaking the fourth wall repeatedly in the process of the running commentary. In short: It's a joke. I do that. Finally, when it comes to fighting, no, the reason you writing a fight against one of my characters is ridiculous has nothing to do with the amount of power or abilities of the characters. The thing that makes my characters dangerous in fights is that I know what to have them do. I'm inventive, imaginative, and sometimes extremely vicious. I have some grammar issues (I seem to love commas way too much) and a few problems with wonky sentence structure (I can't help but think faster than I type), so I'm hardly perfect- I'd say Wyborn and Erdawn are the real people to look to as highest-end writers around here. So, no, I'm not nasty because my characters are totally indestructible with insta-kill attacks. Insta-kill attacks don't work here anyways. I'm nasty to fight with because I know what I'm doing, and I go to a lot of trouble to know it. I heartily approve of Joker's willingness to train you. I would have offered myself, but I can't really couch these things in gentle terms. I'm a very blunt person by nature- if I think something is bad, then I say it's bad. There's also the fact that I have little time right now. | |

Hi, 1-up salesman and sudden compadre Guild. I am Galefore, the mod. You'll find that listening to me is mandatory. Sry, teh rulz u kno. First of all, please stop flooding this forum. I am tired of opening the Gunjin every night and seeing "1-up salesman" up and down my front page. Open one or two challenges at most, and let it be. Overloading yourself is useless. Second, take criticism. I used to be an amateur as well, until Sarai whooped my ass into shape. Stop your whining, stop calling her annoying, and respect her. She deserves no less. Third, please learn to respect your elders and keep OoC **** to a low. Outside conversation related to battle can be carried on in PM form, not in my forum. You cause unnecessary clutter and I dislike that. A lot. BTW, we're not godmoding. Your character is not god because he lol transfurms. Stop it. When he changes, we'll acknowledge the rise in power; but stop acting like a girl when you aren't creative enough to figure out a way to damage someone other than just "player 1 slashes player 2. Player 1 slashes player 2" over and over again. Now, we're done. Go ahead, try me. Last edited by Galefore; 05-22-2008 at 01:36 AM. |

It's a bit distressing to see it filled with Battle Board like posts as it gives me horrible flashbacks to the year 2000 when it was made. Which in turn makes me want to stab people in the eyes. Not pretty. |
