Here it is again. Imagine you're in a cubical room 50 metres on each side. Roughly in the centre of the ceiling hang two ropes, one metre apart, which dangle down to the floor. Each rope is therefore 50 metres long, and are strong enough to climb up. You are armed only with your trusty knife, Boy Scout knot-tying skills, and monkey-like climbing ability. Each wall is perfectly smooth, though; you cannot climb up the walls like a gecko. You can survive a fall of up to five metres. There's an exit (on the ground level). Your objective is to leave the room with as much rope as possible. How much rope can you harvest? |

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Your mother would worry. For the logical purposes of this riddle, a cut is always a full cut. You can get more than 55 m. Remember, you can tie rope together. Not if you pull it down by jumping and grabbing- if you jump, your effective weight gets multiplied (for an instant) by something like 5 for your usual landing-time. A quick shock of your weight already falling is a much bigger strain on the rope than the already-present constant strain of your weight moving steadily. My argument's been nulled. But, I can use that argument to say this: Climb to the top of the second rope, and tie the first rope a meter down from where the second rope hangs. Cut below the knot. Climb down the first one, then pull down the first one. 99m. |
