.Hahahahah! FFXII. I'm playing that for the first time now. It's, umm, interesting. But without having played through the whole thing I can't pass judgment yet. | |

| Defender of Chrono Cross Join Date: Feb 2000 Gender: Posts: 12,543 Thanks: 0 Thanked 9 Times in 7 Posts | Is this the appropriate place to post my reaction to that? Dunno, but this IS the Misc. Forum, so... On it being a sequel, I believe it serves as both a follow-up to Chrono Trigger AND as a standalone game. Put way too simply, the connections to CT are incredibly meaningful if you've played the prequel, but you don't miss out if you haven't. Square was trying to appeal to both demographics (a.k.a. the aged RPGers and the FF7 fanboys) with CC, and they took a rather...interesting...approach. The developed characters argument always pisses me off because those characters who are plot-essential are developed as they should be. You don't know much about TURNIP because he's a freakin' TURNIP. How is there a myth that the music sucks? Next to Kingdom Hearts, CC has one of the most amazing game soundtracks of all time. I think the flaws list is lacking. Although I agree with the point on story pacing, the star system definitely deserves to be there. And their interpretation of the ending is wrong--there's no proof that the dude in the pic is Serge. Aside from that, I find the ending quite poetic and fitting. I generally agree with all of the strengths, although the story, again, has subpar presentation. CC fascinates me because it's an incredibly unique approach to what is arguably the greatest RPG of all time. Never before have I played a game that's such a piece of art, from its graphics to music to story and themes. Something about it just works for me. |

It's definitely not the disgrace FFVII was to FFVI (even though Chrono Trigger is the best game ever made), but it did have its flaws. Mainly in the star system. I actually thought the element system was kinda fun at the beginning...until you have more elements than you can deal with. My main beef was with the characters. You don't need 45 PCs. 15 is fine. Another 15 of them should've been NPCs, and another 15 shouldn't even exist (Turnip, Leah, Razzly, Draggy, Mojo just to name a few. And I think they should've made DARIO a PC. The main problem with that is you can't really maximize all their stats and it's too hard to manage them all. See, I like to be able to micromanage my characters; in games like CC it's impossible.) Stand alone, it probably would've made my list for 10 best games ever, but they slapped the Chrono label on it and thus you have to compare it to Chrono Trigger. I do like how it leaves a lot open to interpretation and implication, specifically how the two games connect to each other. -CSM |
