Would this be the appropriate time to ask what "meme" means?

A meme is a . . .
****, its hard to explain.

Its a "Self propagating unit of culture".
Your body is physically determined by genes, then theoretically your mind is composed of memes.
Basically, Geek is a meme, Christian is a meme, Cynic is a meme, so on and so forth.

The internet has taken the term and bastardized it to be any in-joke spread on the 'net.

What do you mean, "in-joke spread"? (I am not trolling, this only the second message board I've ever been a part of, and, apparently, I don't know what some things mean.)

I can generally decipher acronyms, like "rotflol", leet, like "h3ll0", and I even know the origin of "pwn". But some things still escape me until they're properly explained...

*sigh* It's always embarrassing when you ask someone to define something and, in doing so, they use a word you don't recognize.

So,

Quote:
any in-joke spread
Rephrase that and I should be clear.

This meme is old. But not Chuck Norris old. Chuck Norris being so old, he predated the universe and created it when he tripped over some clump of un-differentiated matter by accident.

no offense, but replacing an occasional letter with a number isn't elite, it's just what the average idiot thinks is elite and used to use on battle.net

the explanation provided for "meme" was pointlessly complicated, albeit exact

a meme is a repetition of thought shared between the minds of others, it is a thought or manner of thinking that is passable to another person and shared by other persons

if a manner of thinking, like understanding a particular kind of joke, expands from a small group of persons to become a trend inherent to a large group of persons, it is a meme

so you could (for example) say that, because the use of the word "leet" or "1337" is largely used in an incorrect fashion by a wide variety of people, you could say that it is not just a misnomer, but a meme- you could describe it as a memetic misnomer

I think memes are easier to grasp by looking at examples: lolcat images, Chuck Norris jokes, rick rolls, over 9000.

Yessssss! I got it!

--[To THE PESIDENT OF FUN] Thanks for correcting my concept of "elite"(Although I am now unsure of what exactly it is, but I don't care that much, this thread is about memes.) The average idiots using it incorrectly and my learning by context have therefore conformed me into another average idiot [CURSE YOU, IDIOTS!]

I understood Darkness' explanation, and humorously enough, "any in-joke spread" was the only part I don't get. Is your definition of meme, like, an add-on to his definition, or are there multiple definitions? No! Your hair is a bird, A.I., your argument is invalid!

--[To Ace Mercury]

"No, I'm not a meme. I'm a real, living,
breathing Walker Texas Ranger."
*Reverse-heel Roundhouse kicks a bad guy*

--[To Sp(ex16)d] I totally just clicked your link! Ha ha ha ha*doubles over holding stomach* ha ha ha haaa! That's genius!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so I'm getting meme. Before, this just seemed like the "Random Crap Forum". But what the heck did he mean by "in-joke spread"? That doesn't even make sense to me....

"In-joke" means "inside joke".
"Spread" means "distributed".
"'Net" means "Internet".
Putting it all together: "in-joke spread on the 'net" means "inside joke distributed on the Internet".

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Thumbs up ^(relieved)Thank You!

Okay, guys, that about clears it up.

--[To CaptHayfever] Here's what happened. I have never heard "inside joke" abbreviated as "in-joke", so to me, it looked like an adjective, similar to "indoor" [plumbing]. Then, I assumed that because an adjective can describe only a noun, his usage of the word "spread" must be a noun. (He is actually using it in a participial phrase used as an adjective.) <Oh, great, now I gotta figure out what a 'spread' is!>

So I thought it meant, "...any 'spread' that happens to be inside of a joke and also found on the internet."

^^^Ah, well, a spread inside of a joke could probably be found in a Parkay commercial.

Wikipedia, while also full of idiots, can at times be a reliable pal.

Quote:
Leet originated within bulletin board systems in the 1980s,[1][2] where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file folders, games, and special chat rooms. One theory is that it was developed to defeat text filters created by BBS or Internet Relay Chat system operators for message boards to discourage the discussion of forbidden topics, like cracking and hacking.[1] However, creative misspellings and ASCII-art-derived words were also a way to attempt to indicate one was knowledgeable about the culture of computer users. Once the reserve of hackers, crackers, and script kiddies, leet has since entered the mainstream.[1] It is now also used to mock newbies, or newcomers, on web sites, or in gaming communities.[3] Some consider emoticons and ASCII art, like smiley faces, to be leet, while others maintain that leet consists of only symbolic word encryption. More obscure forms of leet, involving the use of symbol combinations and almost no letters or numbers, continue to be used for its original purpose of encrypted communication. It is also sometimes used as a script language.
See the "One theory" sentence. That is accurate. The rest is an afterthought relating to posers.

^I totally read that as 'only using numbers is a nubs and posers', and was confused. Then I realised my error and laughed uneasily.

And then the masked killer got back up, heedless of the multiple shotgun blasts it had just taken, and began stalking towards me again...

At least nowadays. It's one regex or String.replace() away.

It's also used to make Microsoft look like greedy bastards by using the M$ abbreviation.
