I have played metroid for awhile but, what exactly is the timeline? do they go in the same order they appear in? (in other words i know the firt game was the first in the timeline, but is the SNES game the second?)

Now we just need some retard like Luigi64 to come in here and insist that Zero Mission wasn't a remake, and actually takes place before the first game.

I would think that Primes come at the end. Then again, I haven't played EVERY Metroid game.

Hmm... seeing as i have only completed 2 of these games so far (metroid prime and fusion) it doesn't make much sence yet (haven't finished prime 2). BTW what was the Return of Samus about? That is probably the most esoteric one of the series.

That's the correct timeline. Prime means first, i.e., it is number 1 in the series (preceded only by number Zero, i.e., Zero Mission,) followed by Prime 2, then Metroid 2, then Super, then Fusion. It's all, as the fic writers like to say, canon.

Samus goes to SR-388 and eliminates all the metroids in the universe except for the one in Super Metroid. This is why Nintendo is milking Samus's adventures by placing a variety of games before RoS.

RoS also was the only Metroid game without Ridley, and that just doesn't work for me.

Nope. Scans in MP1 refer to Metroid 1 (or Zero Mission, for all you retro gaming haters) as if it just happened, and hint at the Space Pirates' future plans, which are executed in Super Metroid. Don't know about MP2, but I'm guessing it would take place after MP1.

Prime 2 does take place directly after the first one. The link is Dark Samus. The only reason that the game is a part of the Prime series. If you beat the first one with 100% items, you'll know what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, I will explain in this:

Spoiler Below
Dark Samus is Metroid Prime in the Phazon suit

I don't think that Zero Mission was a remake of Metroid one. For one thing, everything in the game was different. The suits, the abilities, the areas, and the storyline were all very different.
Second, it adds more content to the series.
Third, it's entirely possible. I think Zero Mission was the first mission that Samus ever went on in order to discover her origins. Metroid 1 says that she began as a member of the Federation, and then became a bounty hunter. Perhaps Samus is making that transition in Zero. The Federation has trained her, now she can use those skills along with her suit, given to her by the Chrozo, to stop Mother Brain.

Then in Metroid 1, another Mother Brain is appointed to find a way to control the Metroids. In Zero, I just think the Metroids were there, and weren’t actually used by the Space Pirates. I think the Space Pirates were more interested in the Chrozo technology.

It's a ****ing remake. You don't have a choice in the matter.

INSERT:
Here's a shot from the official site

Notice how it says "the real story is told". Nintendo has made it out that this is the actual story for Samus's adventure on Zebes. If you perhaps had been following the series for the past 15 years, you would be able to recite that with no hesitation. But you don't need to. Nintendo announced the game to press as a remake of the first Metroid. There's no getting around it.

Well that says that it is the real story of her first mission, which is Zero since that comes before Metroid 1. That makes sense. Metroid 1 referred to her past, and it didn't really cover a mission before that. So Zero was the actual story about her first adventure before she became a bounty hunter for the Federation.

Besides, when has Nintendo ever been right about one of their video game series? They were wrong multiple times about Zelda until they finally claimed to have no opinion.

I think the series and the games are what you make of it.

SPOILERS

Um, no. It's a remake of Metroid 1. It's virtually the same, only with exra abilities, a new area, and a tacked on extra level (on the pirate frigate) after beating Mother Brain. It's presumably called Zero Mission so that Metroid Prime can be 'Metroid 1' instead.

It doesn't matter if they don't make sense. It's official.. So you can pretend otherwise, but if that's the way the writer wrote it, it was WRITTEN THAT WAY. Aside from the fact that Nintendo has never bothered to explain one way or another how many Links there are, since they ****ed it up with OoT. People never argued about it before. It is not possible for there to be more than one Samus. Furthermore, All events happen IN SEQUENCE. Not hundreds of years apart.

I've been to SR-388, nice place.

Also, there is only one explination for the timeline:

Metroid(NES)/Zero Mission(GBA)
Prime(GCN)
Prime 2(GCN)
Return of Samus(GB)
Super Metroid(SNES)
Fusion(GBA)

That is it. there is no other order. This is the offical time line of the Metroid Universe.

is it me or does Metroid Prime: Hunters seems like more of a training for Samus in the demo than an actual adventure sample, like the Echoes demo disk? This might be what she does when she is not on duty, Train a the Galatic Federation, which she still works for.

[spoiler] Metroid Prime Just won't stay dead. First she steals the Phazon suit to survive. Next, she absorbs Phazon to make herself stronger and allow her to regenerate after being defeated by Samus. Finally, She escapes Dark Aether before it ceases to exist and reforms yet again. That final battle just suited to stablize her. She'll be in the next Metroid game for sure. It will be funny to see her in a GBA game though.[/spoilers]

[EDIT: thanks AI]
