Exclamation NEW METROID GAME ANNOUNCED

Metroid: Other M

In a completely unexpected collaboration, Nintendo has joined up with Team Ninja(the folks behind NINJA ****ING GAIDEN) to produce a new, 3rd-person installment in the Metroid franchise.

Here's the trailer shown at E3:

As ML pointed out in the Nintendo forum, the title of the game is shortened to MOM. It's entirely possible the game will delve into the complex backstory of Samus as a prequel. Alternatively, it might be the backstory to the sentient computer that was somehow installed in Zebes right under the Federation's nose: the Mother Brain. Either suggestion could be something truly incredible for the backstory of Metroid.

Your thoughts?

^ Nice white block.

Anywho, I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. Always looking for a new Metroid game.

Approve!

I have clear memories of drifting off in class waaay back in seventh grade, after a weekend of playing Super Metroid, imagining how awesome a 3D Metroid game would be. THIS is the game I wanted and imagined back in 2000, with no offense to the Prime series, which just couldn't hold my interest quite enough.

^^Prime's earliest emphasis on exploration of its 3D environments was much more true to Metroid than the elements of 3-D action they put heavier emphasis on in Prime 2 and then 3. Prime 3's much more elegant control system brought the emphasis on action back to a much more reasonable level. I'm really anticipating the incorporation of the Prime 3 control-set to the first two games in the series. That being said, the action of the Prime series does severely lack the feeling of being a total badass that the 2D Metroid games, especially in Metroid III, typically represent.

After watching the video a few times over, I have made 2 distinct observations:

1. Heavy use of the Kihunter enemies, which I distinctly approve.

2. In the middle, there is a cutscene (probably a flashback) of the fight between the Mother Brain and the Super Metroid (the hatchling from SM/M3). This makes me think that a story concerning the Mother Brain is very likely.

Considering the resemblance, it's entirely likely to me that the woman at the end of the video is a clone of Samus - possibly engineered by the Galactic Federation based on the SA-X.

The possibility of that woman being Samus's mother would make a good plot point, though, because Samus's parents were supposed to have been slaughtered by Space Pirates. If it were part of a Federation conspiracy, I wouldn't be surprised. The Federation keeps getting creepier and creepier in this series.

And it really is going to do a fabulous job giving you more backstory on Samus, taking you more into the mythology of what Metroid is all about. It's going to be great.

IGN: So this is going all the way back to her teens?

Reggie: We're not going to tell you exactly where it fits in the Metroid mythology. We're going to share that a little bit later. But it definitely fills in some of the gaps.
Also, Adam seems to appear.

^ Noticed the comment he makes. Very cool, and appropriate if it's a prequel.

Also, the Space Pirates look like Space Pirates again. Let's hope this game has equal amounts exploration and secrets to story and asskicking.

I'm extremely excited for this, but I'm a little leery about one point. I hope that the game isn't completely story-driven, since Metroid games have always been about exploration and all that Castleroids goodness. Fusion kinda tried to be driven by a story, and that didn't work out so well. So basically, I just hope Team Ninja does a good job of sticking to Metroid's roots and keeps a good balance of story, action, and exploration.

But for some reason, I have high hopes that they're going to do exactly that. I've got a really good feeling about this game.

Also, I'm not sure if this is going to be about Samus's mother or Mother Brain, or both, but either way, I'm excited to see what the game has to bring us. I'm giddy just typing about it, and I have to wait until 2010!

I can't wait to see how this expands upon the background story between Samus and Adam, and how he ends up dying or something. I hope that while this does look like a good Metroid game with a good amount of action, that it will still use the classic exploration of the original Metroids.

I aprove of Samus's redesign, because the old one they've been using since Zero Mission is ugly and too cartoonish. I was afraid we were stuck with it.

I have high hopes for this game, looks like its badassery in many ways, then team ninja is great game makers, so i don't think its to hard for them to do something great, but then for me team ninja = Dead or alive and that is not a bad thing in my eyes.

This game will just increase the total awesomness of Samus in general, what with all the flips and shooting into people's heads and what not.

I like how she's so in-your-face in that movie. It's certainly flashy, but I wonder if it has some sort of depth to it more than "press A to jump on people's face and shoot them"

Talking

I wonder if this could mean Samus being in a Dead or Alive game? You know, give her some "physics" outside the suit.
