Arrow How do you feel about Nintendo sidestepping the need for true sequels in Metroid?

It seems like they're just not competent enough to continue writing the series in any progressive fashion, and if they keep doing this thing where they jam new games between the old ones, they're going to end up with some gaping plot holes.

The Zelda series, for instance, used to be pretty cut-and-dry. God knows why they had to make prequels and then sequels to prequels, besides lack of foresight. It's not that hard to write a post-fusion game, IMO, and it shouldn't be too difficult for Samus to fully obtain a replacement for her original powersuit if that were necessary - that's what writers are for.

As it is, this whole practice of inserting new games between existing ones is placing them on thin ice, IMO.

Any one have thoughts on the matter? Is the integrity of the series in danger of being compromised, or has it been too greatly already?

More importantly, what do you think they should do in a true sequel to Fusion?

If I remember the end to Fusion correctly,
Spoiler Below
she absorbs SA-X & gets her old suit back anyway,

so they don't even need to worry about that part.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^ She gets a version of her Fusion Suit which looks more like her original suit than a weird blue fleshy thing, but yeah.

I doubt it'll be too long before they end up giving the game a real sequel. And they'll find a way to bring back Metroids, space pirates and Ridley, like always.

Honestly, I'm not 100% clear on the Metroid Storyline as it is, so it doesn't bother me as much as some people.

But from what I do know from the storyline, it does seem a little weird that they haven't done anything to follow Fusion. The game was pretty open-ended and I thought it would be pretty easy to get another story going.

That said, as a Zelda fan, I'm used to convoluted, hard-to-put-together, or altogether-nonexistent storyline continuity. So all-in-all I'm okay with it, but I wish they would keep going. Y'know?

The continuity so far is Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission > Metroid Prime > Metroid Prime: Hunters > Metroid Prime 2: Echoes > Metroid Prime 3: Corruption > Metroid II: Return of Samus > Super Metroid > Metroid: Other M (probably) > Metroid Fusion

They've just been filling the space in between Metroid and Fusion for the last seven years.

That makes a lot of sense (having played all those games). In that case, I'd really love to see the story continue.

I think that everything is sort of leading up to a Fusion sequel.

I do, hence the topic. It's actually mostly coherent, despite recent efforts to write in plotholes. I damn well want more games, though, and am grouchy over waiting for M:OM.

I agree, Metroid is very dear to my heart (well it was the closets) and i'm no fan of the prime games, and i still think a 3rd person Metroid 64 with a sort of OOT engine would have kicked every bit of tush everywhere. OM at least seems to be going back in the righ direction.

I think the issue is Metroid Fusion opened up a reaaaaal biiig can of worms which could see things turned on their head.

Not to spoil too much, but it would appear that after Samus' many, maaany anti-pirate missions, space pirates and metroids themselves are no longer the enemy, but rather, those Federation researchers, who appear more and more willing to screw the rules in order to use metroids now that pirates aren't stealing them all.

I think part of it is that the Fusion suit was generally unpopular with the fans. Considering that Samus didn't get her old suit back (just an orange and yellow versoin of the fusion suit), that maybe they're a little iffy about continueing the story in that direction. But with Other M focusing more on Samus's backstory with Adam, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they followed it up next.

^ Yeah, although I don't see why they couldn't just do a simple cop-out and get Samus a "recovered" chozo suit or something. Hey, that would be a decent plot, actually: the Feds recover a suit, Samus goes on a mission to steal it from their punk asses.

I still say they need to remake return of samus for the DS or as a wii ware title in the same vein as Zero Mission and make it more like super metroid.

but I dunno, I kind of think this works, inserting games between others to brige the gaps between games, but nothing can be inserted between 2&3 because 3 takes place immediately after 2 and they know this, so other M is either going to be before 2 or after 3. I don't mind inserts so much because it is expanding on the established story and nintendo has been really careful about continuity when it comes to the metroid series because there is an established timeline of events that is very specific.

and I'm sure we'll be getting metroid 5 after other M.
