Metroid: Other M "I GOT IT" Thread - SPOILERS AHOY

THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING: THIS THREAD WILL PROBABLY BE SPOILERIFFIC

Just picked it up today. Still making my mind up over it. Biggest complaint is the pacing, so far. I like suspense, I like action, but not as much as I like exploration (of which I've experienced very little - being ordered around to find my way to a preset destination doesn't count.)

More importantly, I think I liked this game more when it was Burning Rangers, and not dressed up to be Metroid.

The D-pad controls for a 3D title are feeling a bit dated. The environments are feeling a bit sparse (yeah, I'm in Sector 1).

Don't think the voice acting's nearly so bad as everyone's putting on, but I think it's been let down by a very mediocre translation. Considering playing the game in German or French for kicks, since I've got the PAL version, to see if it's voiced.

Only real important gripe about the voicing, overall, is just how much the big emphasis on characterization is taking the "I'm a superhuman warmachine" aspect out of my Metroid. Call it what you want, but I think that's the real reason behind the resentment. People don't want to hear about Samus so much they want to play with her as the avatar for their own exploration and victories on an alien world.

Considering that, having the game telling me something like "Samus has decided not to use this item until she gets permission" is like giving me a giant middle finger. Frankly, I wouldn't choose to cooperate with the secretive Federation guys if it were up to me. I preferred it best when they were represented solely by the maggot-infested corpse outside Kraid's lair.

I would point out the best of the good stuff, but in someways the cynic in me looks at things like the variety of returning and new enemies and says "Well they had to make it look like Metroid since it sure as hell doesn't play like Metroid."

So, who's got it? What do you like the most so far? Anything you hate?

The gameplay picks up after a little bit. And I think this will definitely be the black sheep in the Metroid family from now on.

Storyline spoilers for anyone who hasn't beaten the warehouse boss yet (you'll know what I mean when you get there):

Spoiler Below
Samus, while hunting the woman in charge of the illegal project on the Bottle Ship, finds a woman in a labcoat moments after finding one of her comrades dead, the woman puts up a chase. Once cornered the woman claims that the Federation has sent soldiers to silence those involved with the bioweapons project, and that one of Samus' team members was killing other members of the group. Of course, the first thing Samus does is agree with this strange woman she just met.

Come on, Samus.

Regarding Ridley:

Spoiler Below
Why was Samus so traumatized when she saw Ridley, to the point that she became completely useless? I mean, this is at least the fourth time she's run into Ridley after having disposed of him (and it won't be the last time). You'd think she'd be used to it by now.

^ We're not up to that, yet, but if you look at it from a psychological standpoint, she's already extra-vulnerable. Being back with what's-his-face for the first time in however long has obviously effected her (think about it; he's a father figure, it's almost automatic or instinctual to defer to him). So she's at a place that lends her to being open to higher extremes of emotion.

I figured, but it was still a little jarring.

More about Ridley:

Spoiler Below
So, his developmental stages in life are little white bird-rabbit, then big hairy lizard thing, then evil space dragon? That's... interesting.

Another boss spoiler:

Spoiler Below
Nightmare from Fusion? **** year!

So, I beat the game.

Spoiler Below
The battle with the Queen Metroid was neat, yet frustrating. It took me forever to figure out that I was suddenly able to use power bombs. The following battle with MB and the bug things was crap, though. The ending wasn't too bad. Overall the storyline felt rather predictable, and I felt like I was figuring things out way before the characters in the game. But the story still had its moments.

The game also felt kind of short, but looking back it was about as long as any of the Prime games. And I only got 39% of the items. Overall, I'd give the game a B-. Not the best game in the Metroid series, but it was still fun while it lasted.

Also, there's a playable epilogue after the credits. I won't spoil anything, but you guys are going to love the bonus boss.

Well, she must've had some reason for quitting the Federation in the first place, maybe that contributed to her decision here?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Also, I've done some web surfing, and apparently I'm not the only person complaining about that scene with Ridley I mentioned in post #4.

Too many unnecessary, weak changes to make a strong sequel. People should keep making a series right or don't make it at all, IMO.

Up to the Ice sector now, and still haven't had any varying paths. Also haven't had any Metroid-like vertical corridors - everything is pointlessly lateral. Very disappointing.

Spoiler Below
Bossfight at the tail end of the Sector 1 sequence obviously is meant to be something else, but the visual aspect of it is a bright ****ing beacon in homage to the original Kraid design. Check that stuff out, Val, it'll change your perspective of that battle tremendously.

^ The game doesn't allow much room for exploration (for the most part) until the epilogue, unfortunately. That's when you can really take a look around and try to get 100% of the items.

Also, I never noticed that before, but you're right. You're in for a surprise though (unless you read one of my previous spoilers).

Unfortunately? Dude, that's kind of the heart and soul of Metroid. I mean, they might as well make a film out of it as far as I care, if it's just gonna be linear the whole way through.

Haven't been able to play since Thursday due to a lack of my HD cable for the big screen and the sensor bar being too big for the other TV (12 inch lol), so I've been wasting my time with Super Metroid.

Good God the VC controller is not wall-jump friendly. Keep rolling into Morph Ball right at the final jump.
