Smile "True Female Characters"

The Escapist : Video Galleries : Extra Credits : True Female Characters

This video is rather Metroid-centric, I found about it through Stuman. He tipped me off about it, as my remix of the Brinstar Red Soil Area theme made it into the credits, which is pretty cool, so I wanted to share it with you lot.

Hey, pretty cool that they used your song. The video itself was actually fairly insightful as well.

Yeah, I was quite impressed with the thoughts expressed there. I don't really think it's fair to talk about Other M without expressing what was truly the issue with the cutscene elements - plotholes, etc - but it's still valid.

I also don't think it's fair to mention Other M without adding that the gameplay is fast-paced and well executed with an emphasis on environment remniscent of Super Metroid. The 3D spaces actually go far to make the game feel confined, though, and I don't think Super Metroid ever truly felt confining to me. There was always a hint of vast but unimportant territory in the background and elsewhere that the 3D Metroid games have yet to translate.

Wow. Firstly, kudos, AI.

Secondly, awesome video. Like Crav said, insightful. I've always enjoyed discussing gender and video games, and that video was really well done.

EDIT: These Extra Credit makers are awesome. I've been watching their videos, they have some really great stuff about really awesome topics. Everyone should check them out a little further.

ZG beat me to it, but yeah Extra Credits is some seriously good analysis about gaming in general and I suggest anyone who hasn't checked it out already do so.

I think it's fair within the context of the video. They aren't analysing gameplay after all so there isn't much point in bringing it up.

Much like the other Metroid games where all you're seeing is Samus's militant heroics, though, most of the gameplay focuses on her dominating the battlefield and outwitting her foes. It's simply not the focus of the cutscene material. It wasn't well balanced because of that cutscene divide, but Samus is very dynamic in M:OM in a way that most will never really clue in to. A large part of that is because many critics of it haven't even played the game. You just have to have a glance at its sub-par sales figures to see that it didn't perform well enough for the whole internet to have an opinion on the matter.

I've watched all of Extra Credits' videos. I love what they say. The humor needs some work, though.

I'm one of those people who hasn't played it, but this sounds like the problem.
