What are your tips or strategies when doing a Super Metroid speed run?

If you want to have fun? Don't.

But seriously, the most important part is how very little you actually need to beat the game. Don't go out of your way to get missile containers, etc. Everything in the game can be beaten without them. The game itself isn't absurdly maze-like, just a little disorientingly-so.

Also, reconfigure the controls so R is your run button - now you can always hold it. Running doesn't just make you faster, of course, it makes wall-jumping much easier. Wall-jumping is very important if you're going to break normal sequences to do things like get the Wave Beam early.

I get the wave beam early regardless.

I've never really tried a speed run because I like fun.
