Metroid turns 25

25 years ago, Metroid was first released in Japan for the Famicom. Pull out your favorite game and play it in honor of this occasion.

Metroid is a 25 year old girl?

Bee tee dubs, actually released on the Famicom Disk System! Go play the FDS version if you want to be an ELITE HACKER who HACKS GIBSONS like it ain't no thang.

^Was it really? I did not know that.

Congrats to Metroid! It's a series that's come a long way and retained all of its awesomeness.

Ayup, it originally featured a game save rather than a password system. Nintendo actually made the password system for its release to save moolah, rather than battery-back the cart as they had done to Zelda. It has the same end result, only us crazy westerners now we get sweet codes and lore like the Justin Bailey code.

The, um, music was actually more complicated on the FDS, since the add-on features an extra synth. It was already different due to the slightly varying tech in the Famicom, but the addition of an synth channel makes it quite noticeable - especially as it was used often to flesh out the sound effects. I'd suggest you check it out.

Awesome. I'll go whip out my electronic dictionary and play hangman on it.

But I don't see what this has to do with celebrating Metroid.
