Finally actually beating the games

Metroid games beaten:

Prime
Prime 2
Fusion - Currently attempting > 2 hour run, although I'm having my doubts at this point. Got the Plasma Beam but I believe I'm up to... 1:20? Somewhere around there.
NES
Zero Mission

Now working on: Super Metroid

Man, kinda shameful how it's taken me so long to finally get around to beating Super Metroid, Fusion, and Zero Mission. Fusion is giving me great speed run practice, as linear as it is.

Sometime I'll pick up Metroid II on my 3DS.

Super Metroid is one of those games that can stop you dead in your tracks, unless you're willing to bomb every wall/etc. It's possible a lot of people have progressed to Maridia but not realized you need to get the gravity suit (or that it exists), or never found Kraid's lair.

Yeah, even with the gravity suit it's a total maze.

BTW, if I haven't mentioned this yet,

Super Metroid controls:
Map the run button to "R", map aim up to L, use Y for fire and B for jump. Toggle buttons set to X and A. Works about perfectly.

^That's exactly how I do it. It just works so well to have run and Aim Up on R+L, because then you can just dash through whole rooms and take out enemies that fly from the top.

Absolutely, it makes you feel unstoppable(and it seriously takes a piece out of Ridley). Plus, you can wall-jump just about anything, like the room before the wave-beam. Sequence break there, and you can do most of lower Norfair out of order.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have my Classic Controller around so that puts my playthrough to a stop there

Getting closer to my second completion of Fusion, I can honestly say some of the Fusion bosses are just awful, especially Nightmare and Yakuza.

You can use the GCN Controller. It'll just be...uncomfortable.

I've beaten Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Prime 2. I own Prime 3, but the controls bothered me so I didn't get hooked and stopped playing earlier. I might give it another go sometime after I finish a few other games.

LM, I would honestly put the original down for a while and pick up Super Metroid. Even then, only go back to the original if you feel like it. I haven't beaten Metroid or Metroid II and it doesn't really bother me. One day I'll get down to it, but even then
I'm going to use a map online.

I dunno, I think he should just go through it chronologically so he can appreciate how the series evolved or something. Plus he won't have a voice in the back of his head urging him to beat Metroid.

But wouldn't Other M defeat the purpose of that

i find that the original metroid, much like deus ex 1, is hard to get into if you didnt play it around the time it came out.

^ Deus Ex is a good example of that. IMO? Play Zero Mission first, and then play Metroid. You'll learn enough about the map from ZM to figure out what the hell you're doing in Metroid. Otherwise, it's just trial and error, which can be pretty awful to gamers not used to that generation.
