I really don't see how they have too much in common. That's just a rather simplified way of looking at it, of course..

Eh. It's just Microsoft trying to fight Nintendo with their own idea.

Of course, they wound up making something else in the process, and it appears to me that it wound up making its own niche rather than attacking the established Metroid one.
