I can safely say that...

Halo 3 completely fails. Team Fortress 2 pretty much kicks its ass all around the block.

You realize that you're tempting me to flood this topic with BONK.

Halo 3 (or 2, or 1 for that matter) isn't a bad game, it's just average.

The only thing that makes it bad is the "hardcore" fans that insist that Halo has broken new ground for the genre.

Not really. In fact, the only FPS I liked from before the huge FPS boom from a few years back is Wolfenstein (IRONY!). Doom was WAY too freaking hard, Quake got boring and cheap, and Unreal was meh.

You know, I don't think I have ever played a regular unadultered match of Unreal.

Its all about the mods.

Playing TF2 (or any Valve game) on a console is just idiotic. PC version is much better and is constantly updated.

It did, at least for console shooters. Halo 1 put the genre on the map and modernized it to put console shooters on par with PC counterparts. Halo 2's networking system is the best approach to console shooters. Anyone that uses the party matchmaking system is automatically better than using the traditional "find a room" method. Hence why Gears 2 is better than Gears 1 in that respect.

Most of the gameplay is derivative of prior games, especially Tribes (Halo was originally supposed to be a "Tribes killer" on Mac). Thing is, nobody on consoles had seen that and Halo provided a sense of refinement to the entire thing. Without Halo, you're not getting other shooters (Killzone, Resistance, Gears, etc) on consoles, if at all.

As long as you aren't on a total crapbox, you should be able to run most of Valve's stuff. Steam makes the whole process pretty much self-explanatory and easy to deal with. As long as you're not giving your PC Computer Aids from downloading everything that looks pretty, you should be cool. Granted, if you're one of those people that breaks computers when you turn them on, its probably a good idea to go to the console versions.

While there isn't as good of a chance of having all players with headsets of some sort (At least my laptop has a built in microphone), the PC version has a bunch of voice commands, the classic mouse aiming controls, and most importantly, the new weapons. Not to mention the Pyro's compressed air blast really helps.

My computer's essentially from 2003. Barely runs the game at minimum.

(if you're curious, here are the specs:
Windows XP SP3
2.4 GHz processor
1.25 GB of RAM
ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series (256 MB))

Pyro bordered on unplayable pre-update IMO. With the update and new crap, the Pyro's actually really fun.

Five year old computer; kind of ancient in terms of gaming. I mean, it predates the Source engine by about a year. What kind of processor (Single core or dual core)?

Easiest way to upgrade would be to crank up your RAM. Get it to 2 or 2.5GB (Basically push the RAM cap on the O/S, make sure the Mobo supports higher ram before buying obviously).

If you have a PCI express slot (prob. not given age), upgrading the GPU would certainly help. Since nVidia cranked out new cards really quickly in the last year, prices have plummeted on the 8x00 and 9x00 series. I'd highly recommend a 9600, 8800, or 9800 for best bang-for-buck. On the AMD/ATI side: the Raedon 3850/70 or above. 512MB variants obviously.

If you don't have a PCI-E slot, you're kind of screwed. I think the Raedons do have an AGP card, but they're probably slightly more expensive. Just checked Newegg: they have AGP Raedons up to the 3850 series, but they're about 120 (not counting mail-in) vs 85 (not counting mail-in) for the PCI-E version.

I found it pretty easy, honestly. My favorite FPS by far. First FPS game ever to feature coop and deathmatch.

Halo as a whole is basically a mashup of Tribes and Unreal. I got turned off the first Halo by the initial level, which looks like the same room over and over, but having played the multiplayer I have to say it's okay. Guns are weak, though. There's a reason why everyone in Quake deathmatch goes for the rocket launcher, and it's not because it's fun to shoot someone 20 times before they drop.

I'd consider myself in the market for a decent videocard, but I really don't need a new timesink.

No, that's not the problem.

Maybe the problem is I play at school, against a bunch of experts who hand me my ass in every game :/

Maybe I can pass word of mouth about TF2.

I think it's cute that there's even a comparison between the two. Shadowrun is the only 360 game I can think of that even remotely comes close to TF2 in terms of gameplay. Saying TF2 is better than Halo for the reasons you've listed is like saying Assassin's Creed is better than Red Steel because it has more swords in it. Yes, Halo has its problems, but so does TF2.

And why, why on Earth are we making the connection between a console game and a PC one?

I was about to internet hi-five you but then i realized you posted this in the x-box fourm.

you realize that playing PC shooters on the x-box is terrible because Mircosoft only lets them release one free update? we PC dudes have 2 new modes, like 8 new maps and the medic pyro and heavy have new weapon sets.

basically what i'm saying is if you have TF2 on the x-box your dumb.

e: also custom maps

e2: also doom, quake, and unreal tornament all own, get out

L007: I was thinking about your Doom comment earlier, and I realized that your difficulty complaint is total bunk. The game comes with 5 difficulty modes... Were you really that bad at it?
