I went to the store today to spend some Christmas cash, and I walked over to the vidya aisle to pick up some new DS games. And as in most larger stores, there were those little exhibition stations where you could play a game at the store. There was a DS one, which worked just fine. No Wii (wireless + waggle = no good in a store). There was a PS3 one, and a PSP one too. So, what about the Xbox 360? They had one, but the game screen had a message that it wasn't receiving a signal. I looked and saw the store 360 in the glass case. It had the RRoD. |

Keep the back of your XBox away from the wall and out of enclosed spaces. Those fans are in there to keep everything nice and cool. They do jack **** if there is no room to circulate air.

Fallout 3 locked up on me numerous times before I installed it, but since then I've never had it lock up. |

Main tip is to keep it ventilated and off of the carpet. I literally have mine on a small little table by itself. Keep it away from the wall, and make sure it has room to "breathe." As far as horizontal vs vertical, I found vertical is better in terms of cooling but runs the risk of more disc read errors as the dvd drive gets older. Mine literally cannot run vertically anymore, but is fine horizontally. For the love of god do not move the system while it is on unless you want a disc to get carved up. If your HDD is large enough, installing games takes the load off of the DVD drive. It won't really help with the heat, but it will help make sure your DVD drive doesn't flame out (that's the second major problem behind the RRoD). Also, don't bother with fan kits either. You know, the Pelican things that attach to the back? They don't work, have caused more problems, and will likely void your warranty. From what I've read, the RRoD issues with the newer hardware is mostly sorted out. I'd still make sure you register the system with MS though.

That's about the same thing I do for mine, and it hasn't red-ringed in almost three years. |

It superheats the internals and causes the solder to melt, then when you take the towels off the solder cools and is supposed to renew the connections that may have failed. Unless your xbox is out of warranty there's no point. |

I have the Falcon revision, and a Jasper one just came out. They have smaller chips, which run cooler, and they put huge heatsinks on them. Odds are the board won't warp out of shape on newer ones. That said, I am still a little nervous from time to time, since mine is but the first revision to be considered 'mostly RRoD free.' |
