Maine Group Calls for Modern Warfare 2 Ban

Maine Group Calls for Modern Warfare 2 Ban

Quote:
When the footage of Modern Warfare 2's "No Russian" level was leaked shortly before release, there was a fair amount of speculation about the outcry it would provoke. The Maine Christian Civic League has opted to add their voice by condemning the game's violence, saying that "any decent citizen" ought to ban it.

"There is a well-established cause and effect relationship between video games and school shootings, and parents of some of the victims have sued video game makers. Mercifully, our own state has been spared the occurrence of any school shootings, but the danger is growing with each passing day," the group wrote on their official site (via GamePolitics).

"The ready availability of drugs, violent video games, and outrageous rock music is a witch's brew which will eventually lead to tragedy here in Maine."

"All decent people should denounce the video game Modern Warfare 2; and join in opposing the sale and use of such games. Moreover, it may be time for Maine to begin a debate over the advisability of banning these games completely, giving due consideration to both the First Amendment, and the danger these violent games pose to the public."

The Maine Christian Civic League appears to be fairly active in Maine politics, taking a conservative stance on social issues. Their stance was echoed to some extent by Fox News, which suggested that there's "nothing to stop that kid from playing it and becoming a terrorist ... on a video game."

Cue ominous music. Modern Warfare 2 is available now.
Damn youngsters and their rock-and-roll CDs! They made God kill Oral Roberts!

What a coincidence. They're calling for a ban on violent video games and rock music---I'm calling for a ban on sh*tty lazy parenting. "I can't be bothered to control my child's environment; I'd much rather have a Nanny Government that would do it all for me." Screw you, baldy. Screw every bit of you.

Funny, I've been playing 'Pac-Man', and I don't have any untoward urges. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to run around in a maze and eat dots and ghosts for a bit.

But, Boo, there is a well-established cause and effect relationship between Pac-Man and childhood obesity!

When I hear the phrase 'well-established cause-and-effect relationship', it's usually in connection to one thing that leads to another in the vast majority of cases.

There's a reason they have ratings on the things.

Oh, come on. It's not that easy for children to get guns.

Or maybe it is in Maine. Who knows.

Yeah, let's all just ignore that ratings system and pretend it doesn't exist.

Personally, every time someone insists that decreasing an imaginary increment of an imaginary amount of health of an imaginary person's life is akin to simulating actual hot-blooded violence, I want to punch them in the teeth and scream "HOW SIMILAR IS IT NOW?"

And this **** about school shootings? If people didn't treat kids like fifth-rate citizens in highschool, they might see less resentment for the establishment. Maybe if you started respecting them as people, ones who are capable of flipping out and shooting you, they'd start getting somewhere. Yeah, I've got your connection to shootings right here, straight from Seanbaby.com:

"Two members of the United States Navy savagely defend their hive's eggs in the documentary Doom."

Ironically nobody seems to have anything against violent books. Shouldn't we be banning those too?

^Lord, let's not even get into censorship about books. But believe me, it does happen...at least, people try to MAKE it happen.

Yep but apparently, they aren't encouraging kids to SHOOT THE SCHOOL UP!

It's just a double standard I've noticed - apparently you're expanding your brain if you sit around reading books all day. Sit around playing video games, and you're just wasting time. I blame the whole "New Media is evil" mentality.

oh, the whole "Witchcraft" thing?

I don't think the real problem is an inability to discriminate between fiction and reality...I think it's the inability to realize that people CAN Discriminate between fiction and reality...

This is my favorite incidence of attempted book banning:

As a Maine resident, I know of this "group" very well. They were the ones who successfully put a ban on gay marriage recently here in Maine with their scare tactics. I think I made a topic about it sometime ago with what they were doing and how IT WORKED. That isn't to say that the government will listen to them this time and hold a vote for it. Interesting fact, hardly if any at all towns here have a mayor but rather a town council. Maine is like seriously a ****ed up place to live in at times.

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us kids, we'd all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, listening to repetitive electronic music.
