I'm sure some of you have heard about Xbox Live being free. But, from what I've heard there apparently seem to be a couple of levels of Xbox Live service available to customers. Gold is supposedly the lowest level of Xbox Live service where it is free. I doubt Microsoft is going to allow us to play Halo 3 for free.

I can't really remember the details, but you might be able to play online for free one day per week, or something like that. And maybe download free game demos. I wasn't paying too much attention, since I'm not really into online console games.

Here's how it works:

There's going to be two-tiers of serivce (Silver and Gold levels I believe)

The first level will let you have a profile and your "gamercards." These will let you show your accomplishments, download demos, send messages etc. If you want to actually play a game online though, then you need to pay for the second-tier. Also, your current Live subscription will carry over, so if you've already paid then you won't have to again.

Yeah, guess I was wrong about the free day each week, but they may do an occasional promotion like that. Here's the official info:

Xbox Live Silver level

* Create an online Gamer Profile
* Access the Xbox Live Marketplace
* Engage in voice and text messaging
* Talk to a single friend at a time using voice chat
* Receive video messages from Gold level members
* Access massively multiplayer online games (additional fees may apply)

Xbox Live Gold level

* Paid level of service
* All the features of Silver level, and additionally:
o Play multiplayer games online
o Video chat
o Multiplayer online tournaments
o Participate in Xbox Live online programming, such as Game with Fame

Ok good. I wasn't really hopeful that Halo 3 would be free to play online (although it would be a dream come true). I heard that there were three levels, the last one being called something like platinum but I guess I was wrong.
I can't wait till Xbox 360 comes out.
