My friend did that a few times. He would sell a cell phone on ebay and say that he was selling virtually everything BUT the actual phone.

I don't fully understand what the original scam was. Was the Escrow set up to send the money back to the scammer after he got away with the Powerbook?

I'm thinking, from what I read, that the escrow crap was something conjured up by this scammer and used to try and trick him into thinking it was legit- notice where they say the logo was just an image hosted by him. Then he whipped up an email from "escrow" personnel to make him think that a payment was sent.

At least, I think that's what the deal was.

Though it is the age of 2000, and people are insanely crazy.

I think that the guy wouldn't have wasted even MORE precious money to go and kill some guy WAY across seas.

Just a hunch, I'd deal with it, or maybe I'm too lazy and mony concious to do such a thing.
