It's be cooler if the tokens were actually characters, not random items...It would also be cooler if the "locations" you can buy were actual places...not characters...

Yeah, I would count the 6 major universes as:

Mario (Mario's hat)
Zelda (Hylian Shield, maybe a Triforce)
DK (Barrel)
Kirby (Warp Star...?)
Metroid (A Metroid, maybe the Screw Attack symbol)
Pokemon (A Pokeball)

I wish they would've represented more games.
