This seems to have been a very lonely and depressed man who felt unwanted, if not unloved. Suicidal people don't think logically. :/

And, I feel for the poor workmen who had to discover his body.

I don't think it's insane of me to point out the irony using such a whimsical method to kill oneself. Suicide is tragic, but if I devoted myself to empathizing with every tragic thing I heard about I'd kill myself.

I don't feel sorry for suicides. I feel pissed off at them. I don't know. I think of my brother, run over and killed at nine...my best friend in high school, dead of leukemia at twenty...and then I hear about a suicide, and all I can think is, "You selfish, ungrateful, chicken-sh*t little bastard." Just throwing everything away, giving up so utterly--it's beneath my contempt. I hate them cold. I can't even tell you.

Maybe I lack perspective--hell, probably I do. But that's how I feel.

Suicide is rarely done with selfish motives; most of the cases I can think of are either martyrdoms or people severe neurological problems. I find it kind of hard to imagine being in a suicidal state though, so it would only make sense to revile it.

Well, I mean that suicide isn't voluntary, much like how sneezing is voluntary. Severe depression is almost like a delusion, and you simply cannot realistically make sense of the world. Without any rational intent, I don't call it selfish in so much as it is something that just happens.

Also, altruistic martyrdom is kind of not selfish.
