Great War - Sign Ups

(as you can see, I am very good at creating original game titles. >_<)

This is the game mentioned back in "interest check". Yeah, this is a lot faster than 3-4 weeks. The difference came from my habit of overestimating the time it takes to do things, getting a map much earlier than planned, having nothing to do, and wanting to get this up before SP's mafia distracts everyone.

Anyway, I didn't explain it fully in the last topic, so I'll go ahead and go over the rules in full here:

I. The Map

The map contains 63 tiles. (9x7) Each tile is an ASCII rhombus, allowing for entry in four directions. Each tile has a certain kind of terrain (mountain, desert, tundra, etc.) that effects what can be built there and what events (explained later) can occur there.

The map is also split into North and South by a desert-savanna region in the middle. The general idea is that the North will produce stronger units, while the South will produce more money. (allowing for weaker, but more units and buildings)

II. The Units

There are two types of units available at the start: Combat and Non-Combat.

Combat units are obviously designed to fight battles. They have three stats: attack, defense, and movement. Some also have special abilities. (like archers being able to attack adjacent tiles without moving. Certain combat units either require, or are affected by specific resources.

Non-Combat units (of which only two are currently planned) are designed to speed up your construction or to slow down your opponent's. Both have significant effects, but they are also very expensive. Non-Combat units disappear after affecting a single building.

EDIT: I KNEW I was forgetting something. Units, buildings, and fortifications will develop as the game develops. You will have access to more units are turn 15 than you will at turn 5, etc. Players are also allowed PM me about creating their own units HW-style.

III. The Buildings

Buildings can have several affects. Some increase your income, some increase unit strength, and some gather resources. All buildings cost money and take multiple turns to build.

Villages are a special type of building that grow as time passes. They start out producing a small amount of income, then eventually become Towns (producing a medium amount of income and allowing unit construction), and finally become cities. (whose income starts out high and grows with time, and can also construct units)

IV. Fortifications

Four fortifications are currently planned. They work like buildings, except they affect enemy movement and unit defense.

Forts are the most expensive, but can boost defense very significantly with the right resources. They can also construct units.

V. Events

At the beginning of any turn, all tiles have a 6.25% chance of generating an event. Some events are very good, some are very bad. You will not be informed of what events are in the game until they happen, but warnings will be given about particularly dangerous areas.

VI. Players

The game will take 2-4 players. I don't expect more than 4, but if enough people are interested, it's possible that the map could be edited to make a 5+ player game work.

With the current map, players would place their capital on any edge tile of the map. The only restriction is that it cannot be within 3 tiles of another player.

VII. Turns

Turns are what you'd expect them to be. Get money, spend money, move units, end. Battle results are calculated after the turn has ended, events are spawned and calculated before the turn.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are still a couple issues I have to work out, so this probably will not start for another week or so. (in other words, I'll probably be ready to launch by Monday. >_<)

Current Players:
1. SephirothKirby
2. That Guy
3. T3hDarkness
4.

Final Note: Please do not sign up if you can't be active. There will likely be a break for the holidays, but if you won't be able to take your turn at least once every two days in a normal week, you should not join the game.

Turn 1!

I actually got an estimate right for once, it seems.

If anyone else is interested, a fourth person will be able to join in at any point during the first 3 turns. After that, it'll depend on how the balance is going with 3.

First, your map:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
All tiles will provide a standard income bonus of 40 gold.

All players will start with 1000 gold and 150 Basic Foot Soldiers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This turn will last 4 days, or when everyone has moved. To begin, select any border tile for your capital, which will be a city. (remember my warning...) You can spend the 1000 gold and move the 150 soldiers immediately.

A few more notes...:

1. Yes, I know what Towns and Cities will do. You just can't know that yet. (your capital will not receive the effects of a city until you have a second one)

2. Advancement will happen around every 15 turns. At that point, older units and buildings will no longer be available for purchase, and stronger versions will replace them. They will cost more, so I recommend saving money for this turn.

3. Some of the tiles on the map have important sounding names/reference something. They aren't any more important. They're just leftover from a system I ended up throwing out due to lack of balance.

4. Remember: South = better economy, North = stronger units. The divide will grow as time goes on, so make sure you consider that before placing your capital.

What do I do with Units?

How many tiles can I build on? How many buildings can be on one tile?

I'll start in the Great Cloud Forest.

Do we have any money to start off with or do we wait for the first turn of income before paying and building things.

^1,000 gold + 150 Basic Foot Soldiers.

SK:
Other than the Engineer and Saboteur, units are used for attacking/defending tiles. Attack = attack strength, defend = defend strength.

You can build as many things as you want on a tile, just as long as all the buildings can be build on that terrain. (no logging sheds on mountains) If you build any of the fortifications on tile any other buildings are destroyed and cannot be rebuilt until the fortification is removed.

You can build on any tiles you control. So this first turn you could build on up to four tiles: the one you start on, and the three you could move into.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
More Notes That I Didn't Have Time To Include Last Night:

1. Battles: Basically the total attackers strength vs. the defenders total strength + defense bonuses from any fortifications.

2. Resources: Consider them infinite. As long as you have the building to collect them, you can use that resource for as many things as you want in one turn.

3. Once a unit ends a turn on a tile, that tile is considered captured. Even if you leave it completely empty next turn it will remain in your control until someone else moves in.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I expected this game to be confusing for the first turn and maybe a few after that. This turn is set to four days, but I'll extend that farther if anyone does not understand what they are doing by that point.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Stats:

T3hDarkness:

^Hmm... Looks like I accidentally left that out of the text I C+Ped. The "city" buildings take up an entire space. If you start on The Pastures, you can't build any farms there.

Since I left that out, you can retake that turn.

^^
No movements or buildings?

Also, don't forget about creating your own units and buildings... It might be a good time to get estimates while you still have a lot of money and time.

50 troops to Demon Tower. Build a mine and a quarry and a farm there. 50 troops to the East Great Savanna. 8 logging huts there. If we can move diagonally, go to Center Savana and do the same thing, otherwise, go to the watering hole and do the same thing with the last 50 troops. Spend the remaining money on archers.

Starting on The Great Lake.

Build 11 Farms on The Pastures.

Build 2 Mines on The Canyon.

Buy 6 Archers.

Move 75 Soldiers to The Pastures.

Edit: Wait what

I'd rather start in The Thicket, and build 100 Logging Huts in The Burnt Jungle.

Erm... Two things are wrong with this:

1. You didn't move anything to the Pastures or The Canyon. You can't build there yet.

2. You started on The Great Lake... Those 75 soldiers are standing still, not moving.

You'll have to fix those before I can count this.

1-Up: Pick an edge tile (not within two tiles of any previously chose tile, including SK's) and start.

EDIT: Fixed turn is also not valid. The Burnt Jungle is not an edge tile.

I fixed it, but I don't see the point of moving soldiers. You didn't really say capturing helped, I'd rather just defend what I have.

If you have never moved any troops to an area, you don't own it. If you don't own it, you can't build there.

And in case you don't notice my edit, your fixed turn is also invalid.

EDIT: It still is. The Thicket also isn't an edge tile...
