| The Bee's Knees Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: The land of rain and trees (Oregon) Gender: Posts: 29,755 Thanks: 1,649 Thanked 5,700 Times in 2,580 Posts Blog Entries: 20 | Well, it looks like my Risk game is starting to wind down, so I figured it's about time I came up with a new game to host. Monopoly happens to be one of my favorites, so, why not do it again? Anyone can join if they're interested, provided they can meet the requirements stated below. If you're going to play, be sure to read ALL of the rules. Yes, even if you've played Monopoly before. OBJECT The object of the game is to become the wealthiest player through buying, operating and selling property. A player wins once every other player has gone bankrupt. PREPARATION There's room for six players in this game. If you want to join the game, post in this thread to let me know. It's first-come, first-serve, so once all six slots are filled, no new players can be admitted. If you want to play the game, make sure you'll be able to check in on this thread at least once per day, save any unforseen events that would limit your access to VGF. If for whatever reason you feel you can't continue playing, notify me and I'll open up your slot to anyone else who wants to play. If your slot can't be filled quickly enough, your property will be returned to the bank and you'll be eliminated from the game. When posting to join the game, be sure to choose which token you want to represent yourself in the game. You can't choose a token if someone else has already chosen it. There are eight tokens to choose from: Mario, Bowser, Link, Samus, Mega Man, Simon Belmont, Black Mage, and Alex. ![]() The order of play will be determined randomly, by dice throw. Each player will start the game with 1500 internets. (Internets are the form of currency in this version of the game.) Everyone starts at GO. THE BANK As the game's host, I will play the role of banker, dice roller, and Lord High Ragamuffin. The Bank hold all unowned property, and possesses an infinite reserve of internets. The Bank collects all taxes, fines, loans and interest, and the price of all properties which it sells. THE BOARD This is the board the game will be played on: ![]() It is exactly the same as a regular Monopoly board, aside from the obvious cosmetic differences. For the Shane Tax (Income Tax) and Purchase A Gift (Luxury Tax) spaces, the modern Monopoly rules are used instead of the original ones (i.e. paying $200 on Income Tax instead of your choice of $200 or 10% of your net worth, and $100 on Luxury Tax instead of $75) for simplicity and balance. (Yes, I designed this board before vbPlaza was annihilated, and I'm too lazy to change it.) GAMEPLAY Depending on your status, there are several things you can do at the start of each turn. Normally, you can start your turn by choosing to roll the dice. Your token is moved clockwise around the board the number of spaces indicated by the dice. Once you have completed your play, the turn passes to the next person. Your token remains on the space it occupied at the end of your turn, and you proceed from that point at the start of your next turn. Two or more tokens may rest on the same space at the same time. According to the space your token reaches, you may be entitled to purchase property, pay rent, pay taxes, draw a Chance or Faerie Chest card, get banned, etc. If you throw doubles, you're granted an additional turn after you've moved and purchased property/paid rent/drawn a card/etc., unless you are banned during this time. If you throw doubles three times in succession, you are banned for spamming. PUNCTUALITY As there will be several people playing and waiting on you, as a player you are expected to post when it's your turn, or when you're otherwise required to make a decision. You will always have 24 hours to reply. If those 24 hours pass and I don't have a response from you, you will be fined 200 internets. If it's still your turn when this happens, your turn will be ended prematurely. As such, you should always pay attention to the thread so you don't miss your turn. If for some reason you feel you won't be able to post for a while, let me know and I can seek a temporary or permanent replacement for you. GO Each time you land on or pass over GO, whether by throwing the dice or drawing a card, you receive a 200 internet salary. The 200 internet salary is only paid once each time around the board. However, if a player passing GO on the throw of the dice lands two spaces beyond it on Faerie Chest, or seven spaces beyond it on Chance, and draws a card telling him or her to advance to GO, he or she collects 200 internets for passing GO the first time and another 200 internets for reaching it the second time due to the card, for a total of 400 internets. BUYING PROPERTY There are three types of property on the board: forums (streets), amenities (railroads), and utilities. Whenever you land on an unowned property, you may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price. In regular Monopoly, when a player elects not to purchase a property, it is then auctioned off among the players. For simplicity's sake, auctioning won't be included in this version of the game, and if a player doesn't want to purchase a property, it'll simply remain unpurchased. PAYING RENT When you land on property owned by another player, the owner collects rent from you in accordance with the list printed on its Title Deed card. If the property has been rented out to advertisers, no rent can be collected. It is an advantage to hold all forums in a color group (for example, Happy Thoughts! and the L337 Board; or the Memes Forum, the Paranormal Forum, and Mindless Link Propagation) because the owner may then charge double rent for unimproved forums in that color group. This rule applies to forums that have not been rented out to advertisers, even if another forum in that color group has been. It is even more advantageous to have threads (houses) or stickies (hotels) posted in forums because rents are much higher than for unimproved forums. TRADING Before you roll the dice, you can choose to trade with one or more players. You can trade money, any unimproved property that hasn't been rented out to advertisers, and any "Get Unbanned Free" cards you may have. A deal cannot be made unless all parties involved agree to it. CHANCE AND FAERIE CHEST When you land on either of these spaces, you draw a card from the deck indicated, and follow the instructions on the card. The "Get Unbanned Free" card is held until used. If the player who draws it does not wish to use it, he or she may trade it with another player. SHANE TAX AND PURCHASE A GIFT If you land on Shane Tax, you must pay the bank 200 internets. If you land on Purchase A Gift, you must pay the bank 100 internets. BANS In this version of the game, instead of going to jail, you get banned. You are banned when (1) your token lands on the Banhammer space; (2) you draw a card that results in you getting banned; or (3) you throw doubles three times in a row. Your turn ends when you are banned. If you are not banned but in the ordinary course of play land on the Banned space, you are "just taking a break", you incur no penalty, and you move ahead in the usual manner on your next turn. You can become unbanned by (1) throwing doubles on any of your next three turns; if you succeed in doing this you immediately move forward the number of spaces shown by your doubles throw; even though you had thrown doubles, you do not take another turn; (2) using a "Get Unbanned Free" card if you have it; (3) trading with another player to get a "Get Unbanned Free" card and using it; (4) paying a fine of 50 internets before you roll the dice. If you do not throw doubles by your third turn, you must pay the 50 internet fine. You are then unbanned and immediately move forward the number of spaces shown by your throw. Even if you have been banned, you can still trade with other players, manage your property, and collect rents. BATHROOM BREAK Landing on this space does not earn you any money, property or reward of any kind. This is just a free resting place. THREADS AND STICKIES When you own all the forums in a color group you may purchase threads and post them in those forums. If you buy one thread, you may put it on any one of those forums. The next thread you buy must be posted in one of those unimproved forums of this or any other complete color group you may own. The price you must pay the Bank for each thread is shown on the Title Deed card for the forum in which you post the thread. The owner still collects double rent from an opponent who lands on the unimproved forums of his or her complete color group. Following the above rules, you may buy and post at any time before you roll the dice as many threads as your judgement and financial standing will allow. But you must post evenly, i.e., you cannot post more than one house on any one forum of any color group until you have posted one thread in every forum of that group. You may then begin on the second row of threads, and so on, up to a limit of four threads per forum. For example, you cannot post three threads in one forum if you have only one thread in another forum of that group. When you have four threads in each forum of a complete color group, you may buy a sticky from the Bank and post it in any forum of the color group, replacing the four threads in that forum. Only one sticky may be posted in any one forum. Threads and stickies may be sold back to the Bank at any time before rolling the dice at half the price paid for them. All threads in one color group must be sold one by one, evenly, in reverse of the manner they were posted. All stickies in one color group may be sold at once, or they may be sold one thread at a time (one sticky equals five threads), evenly, in reverse of the manner in which they were posted. A forum cannot be traded to another player if it contains any threads or stickies. ADVERTISEMENTS Instead of mortgaging property in this game, you rent them out to advertisers. Unimproved forums, amenities and utilities can be rented out to advertisers at any time before rolling the dice. Before an improved forum can be rented out, all threads and stickies on all forums of its color group must be sold back to the Bank at half price. The value you receive for renting out a property is printed on its Title Deed. No rent can be collected on properties that have been rented out to advertisers, but rent can be collected on unrented properties in the same color group. In order to remove the advertisements, the owner must pay the Bank the amount received for renting out the property plus 10% interest (rounded up to the nearest internet). When all the properties of a color group are no longer rented out, the owner may begin to buy back threads at full price. BANKRUPTCY Bankruptcy is when you owe more internets than you can pay either to another player or to the Bank. When this happens, you have two options. One is to declare bankruptcy, upon which all of your property will be returned to the Bank, and you will be eliminated from the game. Your other option is to attempt to trade with other players to secure enough money to pay off all debts. If you are unable to raise enough money, you must declare bankruptcy. When all but one of the players have declared bankruptcy, the remaining player wins the game. If you have any questions, ask them. Now, who's interested? |

For those of you who aren't familiar, with this rule in place all money collected in fees or taxes is placed at Free Parking rather than going to the Bank. If you land on Free Parking, you get all the dosh that's there. |
