A large group of very educated and experienced folks in the aquarium industry here in Australia is doing all the necessary work to approach the relevant authorities to possibly import new ornamental aquarium shrimp! SO EXCITED FOR THIS. I hope hope hope they get approval and start importing; there's a lot of dedicated hobbyists who will pay big money for new shrimp types since Australia is so restrictive with Quarantine. They're looking at the Sulawesi shrimp, as their native climate is different enough from Australia that any possible released shrimp would not survive in the wild here. These shrimp come in a huge range of amazing colours, I can't believe that there may be a very real possibility of me finally keeping some of them in my lifetime! Eeeeeeee! <3 Goldflake! ![]() Cardinal! Harlequin! ![]() Brown Camo! ![]() Black Bee! Want want want. ![]() |

Something I love doing is telling my family that HotD has shrimp. They then follow up with something along the likes of "for dinner?" and then I say "no, as pets". Their quizzical expressions afterwards are so adorable. |

I like the spottiest one, he's well-dressed and a man about town. This one looks like it comes pre-cooked. Last edited by Cosmonautical; 09-20-2011 at 01:58 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

They're cool and all you really need is a little fish-bowl or somesuch. You just have to make sure to keep it clean. (That's kind of a given) |

Space can be an issue, since a smaller tank ironically means more attention is needed (things can crash faster in a smaller amount of water). If you don't have too much time to spend fiddling with it, you'd want something a little larger so the water quality would be a bit more stable. Keeping freshwater shrimp in a nice 38L planted tank is very very simple, though. Heater and sponge filter, some hardy aquatic plants plus aquarium soil, dechlorinator/tap water conditioner and shrimp food, then you're kind of good to go. For the record, even though Bettas can live in very small tanks, it's really not very kind to them. Almost every serious/professional keeper will tell you that they are much happier fish when given room to swim and some live plants to keep the water in healthy condition. I would strongly recommend against anyone ever keeping a Betta in anything less than a 18L tank. |
