Early snow hits Northeast

Snow smacks Northeast; power could be out for days - Yahoo! News

Quote:
SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) — Millions of people from Maine to Maryland were without power as an unseasonably early nor'easter dumped heavy, wet snow over the weekend on a region more used to gaping at leaves in October than shoveling snow.

The snow was due to stop falling in New England late Sunday, but Halloween will likely come and go before many of the more than 3 million without electricity see it restored, officials warned. Several officials referred to the combination of its early arrival and its ferocity as historic, yet another unwelcome superlative for weather-weary Northeasterners.

"You had this storm, you had Hurricane Irene, you had the flooding last spring and you had the nasty storms last winter," Tom Jacobsen said Sunday while getting coffee at a convenience store in Hamilton Township, N.J.

"I'm starting to think we really ticked off Mother Nature somehow because we've been getting spanked by her for about a year now."

The storm smashed record snowfall totals for October and worsened as it moved north. Communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit. Snowfall totals topped 27 inches in Plainfield, and nearby Windsor had gotten 26 inches by early Sunday. It was blamed for at least three deaths, and states of emergency were declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.
WHERE'S YER GLOBAL WARMING NOW!?

Anybody here affected by this? Know anyone who's affected?

My best friend lives in New Hampshire when she's not at school, so her family has a massive amount of snow right now. It's pretty nuts.

My power is out. I can't remember the last time I had a power outage for any length of time. Must be about 20 years. Hurricanes, two feet of snow, tornadoes, and nothing. 2-3 inches of snow, and it looks like it could be out for days (no ETA at this time).

Back up and running 2 days later. 1 night in a hotel and some downed tree limbs but no property damage. Could have been worse. I drove through some areas today that looked like they were at war.

The amount of snow was not bad, at least where I live, but the weight of the snow on trees that still have leaves created an atmosphere for tree damage and power outages, which exceeded that of Hurricane Irene two months ago. Some places will be cleaning up for weeks, and isolated areas will have power outages for days. In the meantime, half the businesses in the area are down or running at limited capacity. As for Halloween, many towns have cancelled or postponed it, though they can't actually enforce a policy of preventing people from begging for candy.

Glad to hear it's mostly going all right for you, Shane. I remember when we got a late snow a couple years back in Ohio, just about all the tree limbs came down. Take it easy on the roads for your own sake, mate.

We had this last week. (and are getting more right now, ffff.)

Unfortunately, the snowfall resulted in a bunch of widespread destruction to all our trees. We still haven't gotten all the branches out, and there are a couple left that are bigger than a small tree and would have easily killed us or the dogs if we were out then. Freudian excuse or whatever (hit by a falling branch) that's why I hate snow.
