Total Lunar Eclipse

Wheeeeeeeeeee another astronomical (and it's free) show!!!

Quote:
The entire moon will turn red as it slips into the earth's darkest shadow.

"People will see the shadow of the earth moving across the moon, and for 52 minutes witness the usually milky white moon turn a blood-red rusty colour," Sydney Observatory's Geoffrey Wyatt said in a statement on Friday.

It's the second total lunar eclipse this year, following another one in May. It will be the last one until 2014.
Moon turns red on Saturday

And there will be livestreaming of the event:

Quote:
For those unable to view the astronomical event with the naked eye, ninemsn and the Sydney Observatory will be live streaming the entire eclipse (weather permitting).

"It's a long, slow free show, and a spectacular one," the observatory's education officer Geoffrey Wyatt said.
Eclipse to shroud moon in shadow

Should be awesome... and I will try to learn to take decent photos of the moon before tomorrow!!

Here are my pics (please excuse the quality but I'm a noob at taking lunar photos and my camera is really not suitable, but I was still happy!!!):

Full moon earlier in the night...

It starts...

Half way there...

Bit more...

Going...

Going...

Almost gone...

I tried mutiple settings and took many pics of the full eclipse, but my camera is not up to it. Not a single pic worked of the "red moon". Oh well... one of a few pics that I actually got to work that shows the "reddish" colouring before the eclipse was full!!!

News pics:
Lunar eclipse turns moon blood-red

Well, I have until 2014 to perfect taking lunar photos when the next full lunar eclipse will occur. I guess the eclipses in between will be partials!!

if you crop that first one a little it will look great, that green smudge on the top is a bit disturbing.

if you have a tripod or similar for your camera i would recomend that you give the picture more exposure, but if you didn't and manage to take those they are damn impressive

I really like the first one, too!!!

No tripod. I actually balanced the camera as best as I could on the letterbox (it has a little gable roof so it was a challenge!!) and I messed with the exposure with every single photo, from 1/320 - 1/1000. The best photos seemed to be when I had the setting at 1/400 or 1/500 or 1/640. I took over 100 photos so I could be happy with exactly 18 of them. *laughs*

Thanks anyway, Jere. When 2014 comes around, I hope to have a much better quality camera and that tripod you mentioned!!!
