I think they gave Nermal that voice since it sounded like a very small boy's voice. Otherwise, I don't know. I was always fooled into thinking Nermal was a boy until I saw one of the comics refer to him as a "he".

And yes, Garfield has seriously been in the toilet lately. But the mid 90's comics rocked.
